Comment:
I would not recommend taking a class with Professor Malek. If you don't agree with her opinion, she docks points. She never responds to emails and constantly changes up the syllabus with no notice. Her grading has no basis, and her 'rubrics' are absolutely useless.

Prof. Malek may be hard to follow at times, but she is a great teacher and she really knows the things she teaches well. She reads an unbelievable amount, which means that her comments on papers are well thought-out and meaningful. She also is a master of creative nonfic, i would recommend taking one of he classes offered in that area.

I've just started this course and would like to note that we have already been assigned three assignments which are not graded for credit. There is a lot of busy work and her lectures seem irrelevant to what the class represents: Advanced Rhetoric and Writing. She seems to disapprove of any criticism that she doesn't stand behind. Don't take her!

She wants you to agree with everything that she says and if you are not writing about what she wants, or you are not agreeing with everything she says in class you will not do well. Had an A on blackboard, then ended up with a C, didnt grade half of my work even though i submitted it many times and asked about the grades, doesnt respond to emails.

She is passionate about what she does, however, tends to make students feel stupid or air-headed. She values critical thinking, but if you can't keep up with her tangents and abstract lectures, then you're done for. She rarely had a rubric for essay assignments, and got defensive in class if students expressed confusion. I do not recommend her.

One of the worst professors I have ever had at UCCS. My black board grade was a 94%, which makes sense because I did well on all of the large projects but when she posted the grades she listed it as a B+... Since when is a 94% a B+ right?? So I emailed her to no avail. Others in the class said the same thing happened to them. She is unavailable...

She really is a good writing teacher, but her absolute obsession with Japanese internment makes it less of a writing class and more of a history class. She is good at helping with essays, and if you know how to write, prepare to do well. But make sure you are always looking at the syllabus. Assignments like to come out of nowhere and she doesn't usually mention them

She has definite opinions on what you should say in your papers, so just keep parroting her. She failed my final paper and pulled my GPA down because she disagreed with my interpretation of the movie. Avoid her unless you want to be her minion.

She matches the effort of the student. The class is about using the tools of writing and producing-nothing is handed to the student but tools are shared if a student asks. Expansion of skills is available. I think Professor Malek is very adept and the class was well worth the time and credit-student levels vary.

I thought she was completely into her own opinions of the book and the writer of the book. I felt like when I had a different take on what the writer meant, she would pretty much tell me i was wrong. i felt like she jumped between assingments way to much and i had a hard time following her throughout the sesmester.

She really knows her stuff. This was a summer course for me, so it was very fast-paced. I would strongly suggest taking this class if you want to improve your writing skills. But do not take it if you despise writing, as there is a lot of it. We wrote a total of 4 papers, the last being an in-class essay. All of which were 3-6 pages long.

Her methodology is often criticized, but wrongly so, in my opinion, since she brings out the best writing and the best writer in her students (if they're willing to listen and work hard).

This class really is a strange beast. It is a class that is easy for any student with college writing experience, but it is very difficult (as evidenced by my classmates) if you are a freshman. Consider taking this class later in your college career. It is a lot of work for a 1000 level class, but it is by no means impossible.

She is a tremendous writer but she never shared her own writings with us. The point of the class was to work in small groups to give and receive feedback from one another. I learned a lot about myself and my writing style by taking this class and I would love to take it again. Prof. Malek does not authoritatively rule the class but gently guides.

Avoid taking her at all costs. The workload for this class is ridiculous, not to mention very repetitive. I love writing, but this class was just a waste of time.

ENG 141 has been my toughest class by far. Its not that I dont understnd, it just a lot of work. EXTREMELY repetative work. Ive written 4 papers on the exact same thing. Shes very help, but only if you ask questions. Shes a bit unorganized, so ask her EXACTLY what she wants when you need to do an assignment. Learned a lot, but class is still tough

I took this class over summer, and rather than learning how to improve my critical thinking skills and writing skills, we just did a lot of busy work. Tons of homework that didn't relate to the class at all, and just wasted time. If you don't mind daydreaming throughout the class period, take Malek. If you actually want to learn something don't.

I know it's weird that there are such different opinions. HERE'S WHY: when she's teaching something she likes, she's good. If she doesn't like it or a student (yes there are major favorites played) then class SUCKS! I had her for fictional writing and it was amazing and then I had her for advanced composition and it was awful! So...hope that helps!
