Great teacher, if you pay attention to lectures you will do well on the tests. Quizzes are based on the book. I feel like I learned a lot but felt I earned a higher grade than I was given.

At first I didn't like her, but she grew on me. Very sarcastic & goofy, but at first might come off as harsh & intimidating. Lectures really quickly, so bring a laptop to take notes. Always show up to lab or you'll fail. Tests are freakishly hard, but she tells you what you need to know (mostly from powerpoints). She likes participation & questions

This class is hard but definitely rewarding. I loved Dr. Schammel, she made the class relevant by talking about ethical issues and diseases that we deal with in every day life. I am very glad I took this class

I really hate biology and hated this class but I enjoyed Dr. Schammel. She is a good person who teaches a really crappy subject. She is understanding but her class is demanding. She is always willing to talk with students and makes you feel like she is genuinely interested in you.

funny that some of the negative comments were in a year she didn't teach. Maybe you had the wrong teacher or maybe you were the ignorant one!

If you want a teacher so ignorant she thinks vaccines "might" cause autism and evolution "might" be false; who asks incomprehensible test questions; who requires silly extra credit to get a decent grade; who sends 15MB at a time to your campus email; who nitpicks from material she doesn't even teach -- then this is just the class for you.

I do NOT recommend Dr. Schammel for Bio for non-majors. She requires a 96 for an A but does not give out A's. Period. She makes participation a major part of your grade, starts you with a 50% and then may increase or decrease the grade. She will use this to adjust your final grade to what she prefers, even if you have genuinely participated.

Dr. Schammel is HARD,there is no avoiding that. And while I may have hated the class, I really enjoyed her - delightfully sarcastic and she makes the class geared more towards genetics as will be encountered in med school, which was helpful. All in all, a great professor, just make sure that you're not taking any other demanding classes.

first and foremost, she is hard BUT she cares and makes sure that you learn the material. if you are someone that just memorizes everything and doesnt actually learn it, she will destroy you because she wants you to learn, not memorize. one of the three best profs at furman. i would recommend her to anyone who is interested in bio/medicine/genetics

Unfortunately, this woman is still a professor here. DO NOT TAKE HER FOR BIO FOR NON-MAJORS. I am a good student who graduated with honors, and she made my term miserable. Unhelpful, rude, unprofessional...Take anyone else for anything else before you take this woman for a class. Plays favorites and grades accordingly.

It's definitely alot of work! However, fully doing your labs and case studies helps your grades, and especially pads some not so good test grades. She allows you to make test corrections to get some points back, and gives plenty of extra credit throughout the term. She's an amazing one on one professor, and an even better person! Be ready to work.

Intro textbook was over $200. Does not teach the class; instead she has "class presentations" where she gets the students to do her job for her. She sends out very large powerpoint emails and clogs student inboxes. She does not proof-read her tests which makes them very challenging. My cumulative GPA was over 3.8...she's wrecked it. Worst ever

Dr. Schammel is the worst professor I have ever had at Furman. She makes her non-major students teach eachother for class. She almost never lectures, and when she does it is confusing and fast. She seems like a very nice woman, but is an awful teacher. Her tests are hard and though she offers extra credit, everyone still fails. AVOID HER she sucks.

Single worst professor that I've had. Likes to email assignments & powerpoints night before lecture, regardless of how many times she is asked not to. Speeds through lectures & refuses to slow down. Tests on outrageous amounts of material. Refuses to shape test to fit the proper amount of material covered. Beware: posts about herself on this site.

If BIO's your thing, Schammel's your lady. She's incredibly nice and helpful, loves to meet outside of class to help you out. But just like most of biology, it is basically a memory dump, but that's not really her fault. You're gonna have to study a ton to get a good grade. I loved her to death, just not her class.
