Comment:
Took his class about the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR). Very easy to understand and makes sure that people understand the material. Names are important to him and never hesitate to ask him for help if you need clarification. The class was very interesting and if you do the work and put in the effort, youll get an easy A or A-.

I took a class with Prof. Hoffmann about the USSR and never anticipated it would be so interesting. Not only are his lectures extremely straightforward but he adds small anecdotes that I found hilarious. Prof. Hoffmann is the reason I decided to go into the E. Euro/Russian history specialization!

Excellent professor, makes class very interesting. I'm not a fan of history but I still really enjoyed his class. If you listen to what Dr. Hoffmann says, work hard, and participate in class you should do well but don't expect an easy A.

Prof. Hoffman is excellent. After taking numerous online courses, he is by far the easiest professor to communicate with at a distance. Truly cares about his students and has realistic expectations. Also really helped me better understand the study of history and I hope to take him again in the future!

Dr. Hoffmann is a fantastic professor and cares a lot about his students. This course was online; however, he is constantly involved in discussions and providing feedback. I appreciated that he was the most involved professor I have ever had for an online course. Weekly assignments are not bad if you stay on top of them. I loved the course layout.

Prof. Hoffmann seems really shy, but he is also very kind and organized. He really does learn names instantly (it's uncanny), and he's responsive to students. Gives you everything needed for exams and will help with essays, but PARTICIPATE. He grades a bit harshly on participation, and it's 20% of your grade.

I was dreading taking my Senior Seminar for my History degree and I put it off for several semesters. It was worth the wait to take Dr. Hoffmann's SovietStalinist History research seminar. He is kind, patient, thoughtful, helpful, and brilliant. I would recommend to anyone who has the chance to take a class taught by Dr. Hoffmann.

You have to go to class to do well. Midterm/final are 3 identifications that are marked on his slides (which he does not post online) and one essay question (he gives you 5 to study and then chooses one). One 8-page paper due end of term, plus participation. Super interesting class..highly recommend taking if you have time.

To be honest, I love history but was not crazy about taking a class on the USSR. Now I am sure glad that I did. This class was so interesting and Prof Hoff is outstanding. He's a meek and mild guy and very nice/caring. He always gave interesting facts on the USSR. The only complaint I have is I think I participated more than I was credited for.

He is extremely knowledgeable and one of the best teachers I have had. He covers a lot of material but because he is well organized and prepares you well for exams, there's no reason why you shouldn't get an A. Tons of (great) readings, though you could get by without reading them. He learns names instantly. Cuban Missile Crisis simulation was fun.

Great class! He is so adorable because he is so nice and very interested in helping students! There was a lot of reading (good ones) for the course, but I actually just read the book reviews instead....Tests are straightforward, the paper is not too bad, and he is a really fair grader. One of my favorite classes and profs at OSU in my 5 years! :)

Great prof. The class itself was kind of boring, but Dr. Hoffmann knows his stuff, and made the class somewhat interesting. He's a fairly tough grader on papers, but class participation is pretty easy.

Amazing professor. He is incredibly organized and obviously cares about his teaching. He keeps class very interesting and will remember your name immediately (spooky). The class has a lot of reading but not too much work other than that - a midterm, 7-8 Page term paper, and a final. One of OSU's best professors with an interesting class!
