Interesting readings if you are actually interested in sociology and anthropology. You have a really good chance to get good grades if you are not a lazy student. If you don't read your material and study and then complain when you do poorly, you probably won't do well in this class either. Solid choice. Would take again.

He is not accessible out of class. Always talks vague and unclear. it was not clear what he wanted from us. He grades students in grade school like we are his enemy. He sends out emails and says these students are the best and their essay is perfect. I really do not know what is the point of doing this cheap gesture.

Good teacher but assigns a lot of reading. He does give the option to do an essay in order to lighten the final exam which is pretty cool. Overall, good teacher but no real instruction on what to study for the exam.

A really great prof. You have to go to class, and take notes. There are no powerpoints but the lectures and the materials are interesting. 40% midterm and 60% final with and an optional paper. do the optional paper it was graded on the easier side.

If you don't take notes or even just listen to class there are big chances you won't get a good grade in the final or midterm.

He's a very knowledgable Anthropologist. Class is interesting, but its mostly lectures. One of the books is seriously my favorite textbook I've read thus far in university.

Awful!! One of the most condescending professors! Only discourages students while boasting about his superior knowledge. Has absolutely no decency (announced that he'll be absent for the midterm to "dine with colleagues in Paris" and will "cheers to us" while we stress out). Assigns his own book for the entire course (yup he's that kind of prof).

Excellent, engaging professor. Has a quiet temper but is very patient with students. Challenges students academically and to think big picture. Focuses on students asking questions rather than seeking out specific answers. A bit arbitrary and abstract thinker, but great in his field. Respects students and available outside of class and by email!

Prof. Howes is a good teacher. His lectures can get a bit boring at times and he is stuck on his opinions, but he really knows the subject and is open to comments and contributions from the class. The exams are straightforward and there is a lot of choice (e.g. answer 3 out of 5 given questions).

Prof Howes is a great teacher! His classes are very intresting. Just write down everything he says and do all the readings because the exam is all written no multiple choice. Very enjoyable class took him twice.

If you have no interest in Anthropology I would not reccommend. I took it because I was told it was an easy elective, but it isn't. The teacher is nice but he is very monotone and speaks quietly. The TA is a hard grader (teacher doesn't correct exams). There's quite a bit of reading to do.. so if you're just taking it for the "easy A", reevaluate.

What an amazing lecturer and researcher. Usually prolific professors are not the ones most interested in teaching their courses so well, nor are they usually the best at doing so. Because of the topics covered, and how engaging he makes the experience, I feel like this class should be necessary for all students at Concordia. Alas, he is but one man
