Dr. Stetson was by far one of my favorite professors at Ohio State. Lectures were interesting and easy to pay attention to. If you study the material he gives you (lecture notes, textbook) this class is a piece of cake.

Dr. Stetson is a wonderful man. He's brilliant and genuinely cares about the students. However, he doesn't spend nearly enough time on the basics and rambles about little details. He also gets way off topic at times. He's a good person though, and I love picking his brain about all sorts of topics.

Easily the worst professor I have ever had. When he does talk about biology, it is only about utterly irrelevant details that will not be on the final (not that he tells you what WILL be.) Impossible online quizzed at unannounced times, pointless projects, and only a mystery final. Avoid at all costs.

Stetson rambles all class about whatever he wants, I learned nothing from this guy. READ THE BOOK, no midterms only a final, all the grades come from pointless projects, everything is online like the quizzes he doesn't tell you when they are, I missed on and lost 2 points on my average, other people missed 3. Many people missed assignments.

Pay attention to the ratings on here. Those who had him for gen bio generally didn't like him, those who had him for 415 or 630 did. He is good at teaching biology and making you think about things in a way that allows for personal discovery of information. Great professor. Very willing to get to know his students and help them out as well.

He's very knowledgeable but his method of teaching is different. You have to read the textbook chapters. Write one question on an index card and submit it in each lecture. The lecture is him just reading and answer the questions on the cards. So, he doesn't really teach you the material, you do. Pre-lecture quizzes are difficult. It's a hard class.

I didn't really see the point of a lecturer in this course, since we basically have to memorize the textbook and Mastering Biology material in order to pass the exams. However, Stetson wasn't a bad lecturer. I would like to add that, contrary to her own opinion, Betsy Wrobel-Boerner is 'not' cool.

Stetson is NOT like other profs who want you to memorize info and spit it back out on exams. His exams make you think, but he is lenient when grading. He covers relevant topics in detail and integrates life experiences. Don't worry about the lab-it took maybe 45 mins even tho it's scheduled for 3 hrs. Great class- do the work and you'll get an A

He would be better suited for teaching upper level courses instead of intro biology for all science majors. His lectures are completely useless since he posts his notes online. He always emphasized how important it was to attend lecture, but I attended every one and feel like I got nothing out of going. I did fine in the class, but no thanks to him

Don't take a class with Dr. Stetson if you expect an "easy A". He does not teach that kind of course. This course is intended for science majors, so I don't understand why people complain about having to study difficult material. Biology is an intricate subject, and Dr. Stetson does his best to present you with conceptual material.

Many of these negative comments are likely from freshmen who still expect to be spoon fed information they will retain only to pass an exam then forget it later. Dr. Stetson is NOT one of those professors. He encourages analytical thinking and understanding concepts fully. Unconventional teaching style but teaches info useful down the road.

Stetson is extremely knowledgeable, unorthodox, insightful, and adaptable. He does not intend for his classes to be onerous, but rather to teach students lessons that may be broader and ultimately more useful. He is honest and fair. Would certainly recommend for THIS class.

Rarely went to lecture and when I did I was lucky if I got half a page of useful notes. He would go off on mini tangents that were sometimes interesting but not relevant to information that we were tested on. Tests were worth a hundred points and had about five questions on them. I read the book before each test and took my own notes and did fine.

These comments are making me laugh. "He's expects us to interpret his information" and (my personal favorite) "Everything was based on evolution." It's BIOLOGY, what were you expecting? The same stuff you learned in 6th grade? He's good once you get used to him. But biology isn't easy, so don't complain if you're expected to do work.

Stetson is very knowledgeable and interesting. Although intimidating at first he really seemed to warm up to us and I found him to be a great professor. Tests were all short answer/essay so thorough book studying wasn't great...I found attending lecture was truly the best way to learn the material for the tests. Not an easy class, though.

Amazing professor, really knows his stuff. Obviously a 'big picture' guy, who wants you to learn TO THINK in a certain way than to regurgitate all the time. However, requires a huge time commitment and lots of effort. Overall, if you plan to go into a bio- related field, Stetson is your man.

He encourages his students to think differently about the material-he didn't just feed us facts. You NEED to read the book and attend lecture! The class is not easy, but he will teach you a lot and encourage you to think and learn in new and different ways. Go to office hours and ask questions in class! Be willing to learn from him!
