I really like him and his style. He is very knowledgeable, but almost always 15-30 minutes late to class and is very long winded and aloof about lecture topics which can be very boring and confusing, but he is very nice and cares about the quality of your work.

Comment:

I have mixed feelings about David. He really knows painting, is great at explaining concepts and getting us to think about why we do things. However, he seems very scattered, distracted and aloof. Some assignments I liked and some I disliked. Class was supposed to start at 8:05, but only once did he show up before 8:30, no exaggeration.

I started in ARTS510 with Voros & did not understand much he was talking about. However, as I grew in my work, I began to understand. By the end of my course work at USC I found that he understood and was more helpful with my work than anyone else.

The most uninterested art professor I've ever had. He seems much more involved with his personal life than the class. Always answering the phone during class leaving early and showing up late. Disorganized and long winded, he almost always went over on lecture and into our lab time, so frustrating. No helpful feedback, and no interest in your work.

he is awesome, knows what he is doing, and gives great advice of work and technique. super laid back about everything, but a wealth of knowledge. class doesnt start on time and is unorganized, but he isnt asking much of the class either. knows everything about everything.

Had him for Intro Painting, since then worked very close w/him for 2 yrs in independent courses. Much as I've worked w/him, I've NEVER seen him in a bad mood! Busy guy-usu. hard to get a hold of, disorganized, very knowledgeable when you can get a hold of him. Get to know him outside of class-you'll learn as much about art as you will philosophy

I love David. He gives a wonderful critique and, if you want to improve as an artist, he gives you a lot of input. you kind of have to look at his teaching style in a broad sense rather than the immediate lesson. In short, if you want to improve as a painter, he is a must take!

the only reason people think he is a genius is because he spends more energy trying to seem smart and interesting than he does in actually preparing for class. he only likes rehashed neoclassical derivative crap. he needs to get a clue that a lot has happened with art in the past several centuries! BEWARE of the moodswings!

This guy is one of the best things the university has going for them. He's difficult to pin down, but if you have the chance, ask him questions and soak in his knowledge and expertise. He's got an amazing mind a mysteriously magnetic personality. Just don't expect class to start on time - ever!
