This professor writes in the board all the time. Not a single PowerPoint presentation. If you want to pass sit towards the front.

One of the worst. Does not have specific exam dates "don't make plans for thanksgiving", and refuses make-ups/early exams no matter what. Lectures in 200+ person hall on whiteboard (no powerpoints) and expresses frustration when students ask questions, stopped bothering to help a student when he couldn't understand her accent, she was in tears

Take this class in the summer!! Small class size, plus you get in-class problems and quizzes that are EXACTLY like exams. Its a ton of material and Goldstein can be persnickety, so make sure to talk to him often so you understand EXACTLY what he wants. Hard-earned but attainable "A".

I think Prof Goldstein is an absolutely amazing teacher. There were some extremely rude students in his summer class and I'm sure they write horrible reviews. THIS IS COLLEGE EXPECT WORK. This really was an easy class if you are used to working for your grade. I think Goldstein is just adorable with his intense OCD. Record lectures.

Take someone else. He's a harsh grader. Essay style exams. He tries to help but ends up frustrating the students. Will not curve the class. Average on exams were about 50-60% for two exams. He really likes vocabulary. Overall frustrating to deal with. There is no negotiating with him on grades.

I would not recommend taking Goldstein for genetics. His exams are essay style and you have to be extremely specific. Each question is worth 20 points and if you put 1 small thing wrong, the whole question is wrong. Its hard to follow his grading scale. You will have a worksheet worth 100 points every week, but he only takes your average score.

Genetics is not a hard subject for me being that I am a worker in the biodesign so I will get too it. When a teacher asks you to memorize the mechanism of two different operons three days before the test that is not a good teacher. Too old for teaching and can not communicate. I am astonished on how he was able to stupefy a class on general work.

Great lecturer, but I can't say the tests or homework were very fun. Can be pretty unclear about what he wants and grades very harshly. Somewhat forgiving if you write out everything you know about the material, but occasionally you will get no partial credit for a mostly correct answer. Study hard for exams; they can be a bit tricky.

The general consensus seems pretty split on this guy. Personally I wasn't a fan. Tests are TOUGH and don't do a good job of evenly distributing class material. He'll have entire lectures worth 2 points and 25 minute handouts worth 20%. It's all a guessing game. I've never had a class grade be so disproportionate to time spent studying. Do not take

He's a good instructor but very old school. The key to doing well is this: attend class, sit up front (since he writes on the board) and take good notes, and go through his past exams. Once you realize that the class is formulaic, it's really not all that bad and the exams don't take much time preparing for.

He's a pretty good professor, it's really clear he's been doing this a long time. But sometimes he forgets to say things, whether it's because someone asks a question or he sidetracks himself. So you have to pay attention. He'll listen to you if you ask him to move something on the board (he writes on the whiteboard a lot). Also pray for good TA's.

This class is very difficult. He is not clear on the hw, in order for you to know EXACTLY what the graders want you must go talk to the TAs outside of class. His tests are essay format, and he is a very tough grader. Sit up front in class because he writes on the white board very small and abbreviates alot. Recommend going to SI sessions.

Dr. Goldstein is a very nice man, but he is not a very capable instructor. I am taking this class in COOR170 and if you are familiar with that room it is *huge*, and he does not use a microphone or the overheadpowerpoint - he writes all his notes on the white board, and his tests are TOO difficult. No partial credit on essay only exams. Avoid.

I just don't get all the good reviews, I would never take a lecture from this professor. Really sweet guy when you go to his office. But he teaches in a huge classroom and hand writes all his notes on the board. Arbitrary grading with no partial credit on 20 pt essay questions on tests. Unorganized and doesn't respond to emails. Very old school guy

Took the six-week summer course so material was very heavy every class lecture. Genetics itself is a logical science so if you have any problems understanding the concepts, MAKE SURE to get help asap. Do NOT be passive; make sure to be engaged with the class concepts. Visit Dr. Goldstein in his office; he is extremely helpful and approachable.

This was one of the best classes I've taken at ASU. His exams are not all that bad if you do the homework and his old exams which he provides as well as know the vocabulary he mentions in lecture. A cumulative final if you get an 85% on the cumulative regardless of your grade in the class he gives you an A. I recommend.

Doesn't use easy to understand language. Uses white board, makes it hard to take note. Can't relate concepts from one section to the next. Doesn't listen to students when speaking to him, just rushes to answer the question without fully understanding it. Exams are 6 essay ques. Hard grader. Bad @ replying to emails. Has open door pol. but is rude.

Avoid. Bad reviews are 100% true, I thought they were bad students. Test avgs 50%. 1 ex) question on a quiz, got all points, wrote EXACT answer on exam, gave 0 & refused to change. Delusional. Office hours are a joke. Asks random definitions, not important material. Waste of time/$. Most are filing grievance forms. Can't believe they let him teach.

Hey Summer 2013 Folks. All the reviews on this site ring true. He is tough but truly cares about students. He has an OPEN DOOR POLICY so use it! was a late add & had to obtain his permission. He told me print notes online, ask questions, & see him during office hours. I did & I passed my last class @ ASU. FYI dont need the book his notes are enough

Very good class. To pass and get a good grade you HAVE to attend class. His exams are almost exactly the study guide, just study that and the vocab and you can easily get an A. The easiest bio class i've taken
