He is an easy grader and not too strict about attendance. However, be warned: you may find his classes puzzling. And if you've taken one, you've taken them all. But the classes may open your mind and change your life. Try Harvey if you dare!

Took his class a few years ago and still keep in touch. His teaching methods are different than other professors, he wants you to take charge of your education and learning, not by what he just tells you to. If you let yourself learn, challenge and discuss during class then you will learn a lot. Otherwise, it may be difficult for some people.

Comment:
If you want a class where the professor tells you what to do DO NOT take this class. His style is VERY different from others, he wants you to take charge of your education and for you to think independently, not what he tells you to. It takes a little while to get used to his teaching method, but once you do you'll learn so much!

I spent the 1st 2 weeks wondering if his 'style' was an effort to get people to think critically. I've now realized he's just an old man who used to be a teacher & now simply succombs to irrelevant ramblings in front of an audience. The class is a waste of time and money. This is why people think that liberal arts degrees like CSCL are a joke.

He doesn't want to tell the student what to do, he wants the student to take control of their own education. He teaches VERY differently from other professors. So, if you are willing to learn and DISCUSS new ideas take his class! Otherwise, people will find his class difficult. He wants students to look at things their OWN way, not his.

Prof Sarles is a great teacher with an unconventional method. This method provides the basis for a class much I'd liken to a coffeehouse-salon of a century ago. If you seek structure and busywork for a grade, this is not the professor for you. As a student, you are respected at an equal level with Harvey and given the same platform for speaking.

This is not one of your traditional classes and that sometimes makes students a little frustrated. However this professor makes you THINK for yourself and is one of the most open minded professors you'll ever have. Passionate about his topic, makes you actually think about the world for yourself rather than tell you what to do. Highly recommended.

I had an interesting/positive experience with Harvey. He has an unusual teaching style and its really up to the student to make the best use of it both in and out of class. If you are engaging with questions that arise in your life regarding the world take one of his classes. The open assignments allowed me to work on something relevant/meaningful.
