Ian is fantastic. I had him for Ornithology and Animal Behaviour 2, and he's one of my favourite professors at MUN. Very funny, a great lecturer and very knowledgeable. i wish I could take him for more courses.

Notes are not posted (doesn't use Brightspace), you have to go to class. Good guy, knows his stuff. Gives really good study guides, both for lecture and lab. Lab is ALL bird identification, it seems crazy, but he makes it easy. You will be asked to prepare and stuff a bird, but it's not graded. Good choice for elective.

Really great prof, would highly recommend. He teaches the class and the labs so I thought that was neat. Wish the labs had more to do with the course material but its no big deal. He is very clear with what he wants from you when you have to write his papers so its easy to do well. He is funny and one of my fav profs I had.

Excellent prof! Gives feedback on the paper assignment and gives study guide outline for the midterm and the final. Lectures are interesting, but are not posted anywhere else so you have to attend. Labs are short, each person presents critique on an assigned paper. Overall, a great prof that wants to see you do well!

Ian is great. He'll turn you into a birder whether you expect it or not. Very clear with what you need to know for tests. Class consists of 2 short papers, a midterm, weekly lab quizzes, a lab final, and a final. Labs are all bird identification - get ready to identify 200+ birds off the top of your head. I would totally take another class with Ian

I didn't think I would like the course but I'm a huge bird nerd now! He makes ornithology really interesting. Gives hints on quizzes. You have to attend class to get the notes. Also if you have a question about something for the 2 papers you have to write, his answers are almost like riddles. Overall really good prof though!

I rarely had an experience at MUN where I didn't overly mind getting up at 6:30 to go to a morning lecture twice a week, for 1 hr and 15 mins a morning, all semester I was not once bored. Compare this to another class I have of the same length and sitting through the class is like pulling teeth.# OMG#LOL. Awesome class.

Ian loves what he does and that really comes through in his lectures and lab periods. He gives many hints for tests, quizzes, and assignments in class and essentially just wants everyone to do well in the class. I wasn't overly interested in birds before I took the course, but Ian's passion has really changed my perspective on birds!

Awesome course! As my first 4th level course, this was a great one to choose. I debated dropping just before the semester started but I'm glad I didn't. This course was great, Ian clearly loves what he does and loves teaching. The topics were really interesting in class and the lab. Fair easy exams too if you go to class and listen to his hints!

Animal Behaviour was an awesome course! Ian makes it very interesting and doesnt 'lecture' as much as he just explains and talks about the topics which he obviously has an interest in. I loved the course, mostly because of how it was taught. No textbook used, just his notes which were great. Exams were average, if you study you will do well :)

Amazing course taught by an amazing prof. Provides the essay questions ahead of time so you can work on them before the midterm/final. If you go to class and pay attention, the exams will be easy, he is a very fair marker. Only uses a bird field guide, no textbook! Even if you aren't interested in birds, you will be after this course!

Take this course if you have any interest in birds. Ian is one of the best lecturers around, and the lab is really interesting. Lots of birds to memorize, but it's actually fun. Gives the essay topics for the exams ahead of time. Very fair marker as well.

Very good professor. His lecturing style was really interesting and the material of the course was great. If you're even remotely interested in birds before this course you'll be a hardcore birder by the end of it. Definitely recommended.

Great material, interesting course. Could put his notes online, put them in point form OR slow down in class so that slow writer could have complete neat notes for the exam and not spend hours begging friends for theirs and copying them.

This fellow has definitly got some quirk to him... He promotes discussion and loves arguing. I think I took more away from his lectures then any other class i attended during my degree. Long exams but you know exactly what you need to study. Bird lovers/haters alike so look into taking his courses.
