Comment:
his lectures are insanely long and insanely boring. you have to write 3 questions before every class but you'll get a b+ if you don't do any of them but get a's on the tests.

So all you gotta do is come up with 1-3 questions to send to him before class, I personally stressed about that everytime. HOWEVER he doesn't care if your questiong is "stupid" in fact he doesnt think it is. So dont worry about it and you'll skate right by in this class with an easy A.

Comment:
I took Beethoven, His Legacy with Professor Coen since Willamette requires a performing arts credit. This class was definitely on the easier side, but that doesn't mean it didn't require preparation. He also requires you to send him questions before every class, even if you don't have any, and the material can be quite dull.

Absolutely inspired musician, lengthy lectures, but it's probably the most intense, hands-on instruction I've ever had. I'd recommend him over any piano faculty at WU.

I revived an interest in music and history through his colloquium on Beethoven and the "concept of the hero." His knowledge is extraordinary, but his lectures can be quite long. I wait for the moments when he plays the piano, because it is amazing. Great guy, but very hard to meet with.

Coen is an inspiring teacher to whom I owe a great deal for the direction of my career in music. I arrived at Willamette as an untrained and unfocussed goof-off musician on a vocal scholarship. In my second and third years I studied piano and music history with him, and my life was diverted from vague obscurity to a devotion to the craft of music.

I had Coen in the 1990's and he was the best Music History prof I've had. Made history about as interesting as it can be. . .
