I've taken 4 classes with Loftus, all on Japanese history. He's extremely enthusiastic about history, and very knowledgeable. He's just....a very dry and a bit of a rambling speaker. He grades on papers, not tests. The reading he assigns is generally pretty interesting, downside being that he sometimes assigns you books that he wrote.

Lecture was a bit dry most of the the time, but his class was pretty easy, the readings are interesting. There are no tests in this class, just essays, so that makes this class relatively easy. He's pretty laid back but very enthusiastic about his subject.

Professor Loftus is easily the best language teacher I've ever had. I've learned Japanese more efficiently in one semester than I learned French in four years. His teaching style and class structure is extremely organized and perfect for effectively learning a language. He is also very friendly and willing to answer any questions/help.

Interesting subject, generally a boring class. People are on their laptops the whole class and not really paying attention. You can skip a lot of the reading. Given that, I still enjoy it because I know nothing about Asian studies and the subject keeps me engaged. More focus on Japan's history than purely feminism. We watch a lot of movies!

Although he is a nice person, he is not the best teacher for Japanese. His accent is different and made us spend 3 days on material that we didn't need to like the dialogue.

Loftus-sensei clearly outlined the requirements of the class ahead of time and was readily available to discuss and issues or questions I had during his office hours. He's very friendly and a gifted teacher. His patience made dealing with some of the less informed students in the class much more bearable. I can't wait to take my next class with him

He is a nice person who always says hi to his students in the halls. While in his class, though, I did not feel prepared for tests and didn't feel confident in my speaking abilities at all. I wish we worked on speaking a bit more. Also, he has a very...different...accent from native speakers

Prof. Loftus is very understanding, thorough, and willing to help. He doesn't dodge questions, and really wants his students to learn the language. I would definitely want to take one of his classes again!
