Jean is amazing. She is kind, incredibly understanding, and approachable. Get to know her during the class & office hours. Her writing assignments are very open so you can pursue what interests you as an individual, and her lectures, readings, & class discussions are eye-opening, though a bit biased towards her beliefs. TAKE AN ED CLASS WITH HER!

Jean assigned a lot of reading in tutorial, and I ended up not being a huge fan of the topic. However, she is clearly a talented professor. She is incredibly honest and open. She's always willing to talk to you if you have any issues. I would definitely recommend taking at least one of her classes before she retires!

Ignore those negative reviews: Jean is a great professor. Like in life, you need to come to class prepared to be creative and flexible, as Jean considers the syllabus a guideline, at best. Discussions were lively, readings were really interesting, and writing assignments were genuinely fun! I learned a lot and actually had fun!

Professor Ketter is great. She genuinely cares about each of her students, and knows her discipline incredibly well. Some of the assignments are hokey, but sometimes it's nice to have an art project again.

Ketter was a good teacher. The class is graded mostly on papers which she would give you chances to make up if you did not do well on them. She would always make time for you if you needed an appointment to go over material or had questions on assignments. I enjoyed her and her class.

I don't know what all of these bad reviews are about. Jean Ketter is the best professor at Grinnell College, hands down. She is amazingly smart, always engaged, and truly cares about her students. The best thing about Jean: she isn't an academic snob like the rest of Grinnell professors. She is more like I know you're smart and less prove it.

Discussions were anything but. She couldn't control the class. We often spent the entire period hearing about the life experiences of one or two people. Her grading is also directly porportional to the amount of sucking up you do.

she is really really arbitrary. i don't know how smart or capable she is, frankly i don't care, but as far as grading, the only thing that will semi guarantee you a good grade in her class is a lot of butt kissing and going to office hours and let her talk. often unprepared for classes.

please, please don't be misled by the strings of terrific reviews if you're planning on taking her class based off of those. i did just that and boy, does this woman blow. discussions go out of hand all the time, and the word arbitrary is almost a joke as far as her grading.

Very, extremely subjective. Picks favorites without hesitation and out in the open. Not that I should have done well, but neither should have my classmates who turned in half the stuff late and missed classes, but they did! Unclear in her expectations. Sensitive to unintended slights.

One of the best teachers in the college. Caring, creative, loves the subject matter, imparts it well, makes class fun. I'm so glad I got to take her twice!
