Comment:

Taken his class 3x (Fic2, prose, IFF) Awesome dude. Gives good feedback, but it's concise. He has a lot of students, so take advantage of the one on one conference. I'm not sure that there is another prof that could make prose forms enjoyable. He himself is a genre writer, so he doesn't discriminate if you write speculative fiction.

Jeff assigned 60 pages throughout the semester, but never graded one. He did not provide any feedback except for little snippets when handing back papers occasionally. Does not grade anything so you won't find out how you're doing in his class until the very end of the semester. Not helpful unless you reach out to him, and is limited even then.

Jeff is one of the greatest teachers I've had at Columbia. He's a wonderful dude and he respects students and their work-and he's a working writer himself, so he can provide the kind of insights that only come with experience. Take Jeff and you'll be alright.

Comment:

Jeff is a very, very cool and chill dude. Although he wasn't as tough a critic as my Fiction I teacher, he gave me a very different perspective on writing and following through with my ideas into actual words. I would probably take him again if the chance presents itself to me, and I would also recommend him to anyone looking to improve a lot.

I was really nervous going into Fiction Writing I because it's been a while since I've really put effort into my writing, but Jeff was so helpful and understanding that I had nothing to worry about! He helped me find confidence writing and sharing my writing with others. I'm looking forward to taking Fiction Writing II with him this semester!

Jeff is working on his third book and still manages to be involved in the student's writing. He's easygoing and straight-forward. He's been really helpful with the novel I'm writing, giving me recommendations from movies to stories and helping me analyze my arc. If you want a teacher who cares about writing, go for him.

I've had Jeff twice now, and I have to say he is definitely one of my favorite teachers in the fiction dept- hell, the whole school. He is really interested in what you're writing, and always has insightful feedback to make your work as good as it can get in the amount of time given. Laidback, yet expects your best. Awesome teacher, awesome person!

I like Jeff as a person, but he really is a stickler for getting stuff in on time and if you don't, then it could lower your grade substantially. Coming from a FICTION 1 class where all you had to do was turn in 60 pages, this was a little tough.

I don't understand all the hating on Jeff. He's a great teacher and if you want some really good feedback go talk to him. He helped me focus on what I wanted to write about in my future and he definitely did not grade based on gruesomeness. He was just fair. And I put hotness just to boost him from a 1. He's better than a 1!

Jeff does seem perpetually to have just rolled out of bed, but I'm not sure how "prepared" you really need to be; the story workshop method is prescripted anyway. Jeff is the only likeable (or even tolerable) fiction writing teacher I've had so far. Nice guy, sharp insights, easy to interact with, less of an automaton than the others on staff.

Jeff is pretty fun but he WILL sway your fiction writing in a certain direction. I felt inadequate if I wrote something that wasn't gruesome, ****ed, or related to bodily functions, and it showed in my output at the end of the semester. I'm no prude but I like a little variety in mood and content. This class was kind of juvenile.
