Amazing Professor! Class emphasis on gaining the confidence to speak spanish and having the ability to discuss important topics. Fair grader and clear expectations to succeed in the class. Need to always be prepared to use material and to put effort in during class. Cares a lot about his students, and is very responsive to engaged students.

So funny! Prof Barnett uses perfect mix of English and Spanish for this course. He's tough on grammar, and expects good vocab as a literary translator. I learned a lot from him and recommend!

Professor Barnett is very nice and class is fairly interesting for an FDR. The tests are doable until the end, which killed my grade. I had an A all semester until literally the last week when the last test dropped it significantly, and he did not use my participation to overlook it. But, overall, the class was decent and fairly entertaining.

I loved taking this class. I'm in another class with him next semester. It was hard to get the A, but in the end I really appreciated the work I put into the class.

Awesome teacher. He really cares about his students. Only a few tests and no final. Homework is pretty easy and as long as you participate in class you will do just fine. Great guy, great class.

I have literally taken all of the classes he's offered--this guy is an AMAZING teacher. He's super engaging and understanding. I've learned so much from him. Definitely take advantage of his office hours. If you show interest and enthusiasm for the material, he takes you under his wing. My favorite prof at W&L, hands down!

I really enjoyed this class, I learned so much information and Professor Barnett really knows his stuff, he has traveled to many places in Latin America. The tests are not super difficult but you have to always make sure you keep up with the reading. Highly Recommend him!

Likes to have lots of interaction with students during class, a little too reliant on the textbook. Offers a great deal of freedom in terms of assignments. Very enthusiastic about his subject

I cannot attest much to Professor Barnett's teaching, but if you have the misfortune of having him as a trip leader for a study abroad session, make sure you suck up before you go, and don't expect to do to well.

Tends to stray off topic during lecture, assuming that everyone reads and understands the material... which tends to end up not being the case, since it's never relevant to what is discussed in class.

Great professor. He is passionate about what he teaches and it makes the class enjoyable. He is very approachable and always willing to help. Class lectures can be a bit non-linear, but it is due to the material and not to his teaching. Amazing course, great teacher. I highly recommend it.

Had this teacher a couple times, liked him a lot the first but was very ambiguous about what he wanted for 350. A very hard grader when you don't know what he wants. But a nice guy.

Make sure he loves you by the time drop/add ends or drop the class. Otherwise he seems like an unreasonable grader, unbelievably more demanding of your time than other professors in the department, and not very nice.

The key too clash is flashcards just keep using flashcards to remember all the vocab and grammar. Once you have done this you will surely receive a good grade provided that you answer his questions when he calls on you in class.

Loved the content of Spanish-American Civ & Culture. Great lectures, brilliant prof, really interesting material. A LOT of focus on Spanish grammar/fluency, though--don't take unless you're a Spanish major or have a similar level of Spanish.

Very straight foward teacher. He threatens to give pop quizes but he only gave three all semester and in the end he dropped one of them. The first two test can be aced if you study really hard know the chapter especaially the situational vocab.
