Prof. Engwenyu was a pretty good teacher, but his lecture style wasn't super engaging. Your only grades are 4 tests and a final paper. Every test is essay questions only, and he expects you to write a lot and get every detail right.

Took his class online, his Canvas was not well organized, many pages were empty or inaccessible. Grading standards are vague and tough. Accessibility for feedback is minimal, do not expect to get a clear answer to your questions.

I took his African world history class. Really educated guy, makes lots of jokes during lecture. Often shows up less than 5 minutes late but makes sure to cover everything during lecture. Not a harsh grader, everything you need to know for the exams are in the lecture packets. No homework. Class is just 3 written exams, and one 5-paged paper.

While he is funny at some points, he is very rude when things are not going the exact way he wants. He was late to class every single time, and if you left to use the bathroom or early (even for academic purposes) he spoke poorly about you in front of the class. He is very knowledgeable with the material, but his teaching style isn't developed.

You have four essay question exams and a paper-based on two chapters from a class book that is due the day of the final. All of the exams are based on the lecture notes he hands out during class. As long as you show up to class and skim through the readings passing is easy. Also, he likes to tell jokes during his lectures.

Do not take this class with this professor. Grade is based solely off of discussions and essay exams. Never got a single 100 on any assignment, he nit picks every little detail. Discussions are open for only 24 hours and you have videos to watch that go along with it, not nearly enough time. Everyone says the same thing with small tweaks. AVOID

He makes the videos available the day before the posts on them are due, which isn't nearly enough time. For the interactive discussions everyone watches the same videos, answers the same questions and comes up with nearly the same post and then we make comments on posts. Maybe I'm missing something but it just doesn't make sense to me.

He is very knowledgeable about African History and tells some great stories in class. Sometimes the lectures could get a bit dry, but overall they were interesting. I learned a lot in this class. Be prepared for essay tests. You need to incorporate points from the readings, but I just skimmed through them rather than read the whole thing.

Engwenyu is a wonderful professor; amongst all the words that describe him I think kind and passionate are the most fitting. Attendance is important! Also, be sure to purchase the text as he does require you to do a bit of reading (reading very important to doing well in the exams) Oh, and he's very humorous. I highly recommend his class.

I found Joseph Engwenyu to be very rude and disrespectful. Anytime I emailed him about questions about grades or the syllabus he responded to my emails as though I was an idiot and gave no clarification. He also took a long time to grade assignments, making it difficult to make improvements before the next ones were due.

Joseph Engwenyu is the most disrespectful professor I have ever experienced. He always makes a point to make you feel like you a less than and that you are no good. I get, he knows his history but his "job" is to teach not to ridicule because students didnt know the information before taking his class. If you are wanting a professor to teach you and not make you feel like you are stupid Dont take Engwenyu. I was able to pass the class with an A- but he is still the most disrespectful person I have yet to meet.

This is a role-playing course with little involvement of the professor beyond guidelines and grading performance. He can be a little unclear due to English likely not being his first language but I loved him none the less. His grading was fair and easy as long as you came and actively participated. DO NOT take this course if you hate public speakin

His only grading is in the exams, but he makes up for that by expecting a lot from them. One of the most valuable classes I've taken, it's a bonus that he's occasionally hilarious. Protip if you plan on taking his classes: outline your ideas, make sure they're clear and make sure to stay until almost everyone has left.

Comment:
Professor Engwenyu is terrible. He knows his history, but that is all. His tests are extremely difficult. You MUST read the book and take notes in class, the lectures are not enough to pass his tests. He does not help at all, I emailed him 5-6 times and never received a response back. If you can avoid it, DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!
