Comment:

Professor Valente is the best professor I've ever had in terms of explaining concepts and answering questions. Grade is completely based on tests, which are more difficult than problems discussed in classroom. Only those who score higher than the average+standard deviation can get an A.

I thought I was good at math. I was not. Professor Valente is extremely clear and organized, and really good at explaining concepts, however, his tests are very difficult. The questions on his tests are way harder than the examples given in class. He is a great professor and a very nice person, just really difficult.

His class is extremely organized and clear, and his homework and test are not that terrible. Office hours are limited, probably because he has lots of other things to do. Take 250 or 320 of him and you'll never regret.

This was a major shock for me (an incoming freshman at the time). I had come with credits from the AP BC Calc test and thought I was great at math. I was not. I immediately jumped into long office hours, which were definitely helpful, but hard. I studied for countless hours only to receive barely passing grades (they were slightly curved). HARD

I love this man. He is extremely clear and organized, and he is more than willing to help you with difficult concepts. I highly recommend him- he's easily one of the best math teachers I have ever had.

Valente is a very good professor, perfect for math. He lays information out very clearly and if you don't understand something in class is very helpful in office hours. Homework is optional but it helps to do it. Tests are hard but there is never any information he did not cover on them.

Yes, the tests are hard. But Valente makes an effort to have everyone understand all the material, and he really cares about his students. Don't take this class to boost your GPA, take it to learn Multi.

Had Valente for FSEM 141 and Calc 113. Amazing advisor but there are better calc professors, tough tests, harsh grader, especially on essays. He is incredibly smart and very helpful if you make the effort. All the comments that say he is tough are comepletely true!!!

Everything in class is just discussion based with Valente leading the discussion. He is able to keep the discussion at least mildly interesting for the entire class usually. A lot of boring reading is required, but other than that, there are only 3 papers. No final was given though.

Stickler on grammar and overall a tough grader on papers. He is a classroom facilitator for discussions...in other words the class is what you make of it. If no one read, you will just sit there, I fell asleep a few times.

Professor Valente has pristine handwriting, assigns a lot of homework, gives ridiculous tests, but is fair in grading. The only problem I had with him was the lack of curve at the end of the class. I enjoyed the class because the material is interesting, but because Theory is quite difficult, there is no way I can major in Math.

Awsome professor! Very clear at teaching and has very neat handwriting too. He really understands the students. I would say he is an ideal professor, you cannot expect a better one at Colgate.

Excellent professor. Workload isn't very time-consuming, but is interesting and thought-provoking. Tests relied on your mathematical intuition, but you really don't have to study too much for them, which is nice. His lectures were straight-forward and he's very helpful.
