Really good at making the lectures interesting in my opinion. Very sweet and well articulated. Responds to emails fast. I asked him for some recommendations for further readings and he sent a really comprehensive list and helpful directions. Discussions are also inclusive.

Approachable, gentle, somewhat conventional. Pretty interesting visuals and tries to be fair to students and the material. Requires considerable reading (usually 20-50 pages per week, and sometimes quite challenging material) and lots of writing. Would love to see more like the sections on Indian, Japanese and Native American forms and traditions.

A prof with good intentions, but not very flexible to students' needs. Gave out many readings that were often inaccessible, or convoluted. Made it easy for the class to take jabs at the opposite viewpoint. Pretty biased altogether and quite condescending. Average difficulty assignments, but a tough and not-easily-satisfied grader nonetheless.......

one of my favorite profs in the art history department! absolutely LOVED his class. lectures were clear, concise, and engaging. he gave helpful written feedback on quizzes/exams/papers, offered extra credit. you were expected to know the material but the way he structured his lectures made it easy to recall information. would definitely take again!

Kerr Houston was always incredibly well prepared for class and all of his lectures were interesting. I never felt like I took this class because I had to, and the few times I had to miss class, I was always sad about it. This class (Ancient through Gothic) taught me more about ancient history than I had ever known, and didn't pile on homework

If you are taking Art Matters, take it with Kerr Houston! He was one of my favorite professors this semester. He is very prepared for class and his expectations are clear. He finds a way to make the material relevant and engaging. He will challenge you but I also felt comfortable having a dialogue with him, even if we had different perspectives.

He's a very hard grader. Almost every sentence of my essays had critiques about how I was incorrect in one way or another. (Even though my grade on the essays averaged a high B.) The whole class is based are discussion. If you're quiet I don't recommend taking his class.

Solid. Certainly not the easiest professor in AH, but he works hard to be fair and is very organized. Lovely PowerPoints and a real effort to involve students in discussion.

On of the best here, really sweet & intelligent, <3s what he does, you can tell when you read the comments he writes on the word docs you email him (refreshing that he actually wants emailed papers). He's understanding... I fell asleep every class because I'm a sleepy person and b/c he has a really soothing voice, (not from boredom! sorry kerr!)

Kerr was our favourite English teacher in Brno/Czech republic. He taught us well and classes with him were interesting, nice to learn also about America...Finally we realized he has talent for languages - He learned Czech by himself...and spoke like native Czech. Nice to meet people like him!

I love Kerr Houston. I have him for Ancient through Gothic, and if you are passionate about art history he is the professor you want. He is the person I hope to be when I'm older- he knows so much about art history, and is extremely passionate about his work. He's one of my favorite professors at MICA. :) Kerr, you rock!

Very well prepared for class. Very democratic about discussion, really listens to students. Tries to mix up class with group activities... three 3-page papers and one 7/8 page final paper, 2 group presentations and 2 extra credit papers along with weekly readings... not an unmanageable workload - but a lot for an IH1 class. Kerr is very good!

This is the second class I've taken with Kerr. He is the best teacher at this school. He not only gives you a great AH education, but he actually pays attention to how well you write and helps with that, too. He's very passionate about the subject matter. He is HUGE on class participation and really cares about what his students think.
