Comment:

A truly life changing teacher who gives his all and pushes you to be a better person. You'll learn more than you expect in his classes because he creates spaces where you can learn from your peers. He's a bit flaky, but he more than makes up for it by spending the extra hour with you on feedback.

Kiese is my favorite professor I've had at Vassar. He really pushes you outside of your comfort zone and is also very easy to talk toâ€"he does away with a lot of annoying pedagogy and distance in his conversations with you (both in-class and out), so you feel extremely valued as a student.

Had known that the Hip-Hop FWS required me to write and perform raps 3 times throughout the semester I probably wouldn't have done it. But I am extremely glad, now, that I did. He earned my respect, and because I respected him I pushed myself to do well in his class, which led to an enormous amount of growth as a person in a short amount of time.

The best thing to ever happen to Vassar. I don't think you've really been pushed or cared about until you've been in his class. You want to see some growth, take ANY of his classes. The material he uses, the way in which the conversation is conducted, and the topics we address, together have shaped my Vassar experience in a way I am proud of.

Kiese, as he prefers is the man... Loves music, loves intellect, loves his students. Definitely loves to talk life and knows his sports especially basketball. Take this course - hip hop seminar... Def worth your time. VC should be proud to have Prof Laymon

The class was a joke. Lectures, platitudinous beyond belief. I learned nothing about what it means to write well. Everything that comes out of his mouth is cool, hip-hop vagary and nonsense. All style, no substance.

Vassar is one of the more expensive schools in the country. My time there was made worth it because of this man. Incredible. He changed the way I read, write, listen and create. He doesn't even know half of how good (or cute) is he.

Like so many young "hip" male professors, Kiese is well-loved on campus, though I find him intolerably frustrating. He is very interested in political (rather than aesthetic) approaches to literature, and he often uses his political ideology in a hurtful (even dictatorial) manner. I did not feel safe in his class to speak my mind.
