Comment:

Out of the dozens of classes I've ever taken, Larry might be the worst lecturer I've had. His slides are extremely outdated, he speaks incomplete sentences that are hard to follow, and generally puts little effort into teaching. STA6166 could be a good class and relevant to my research, but unfortunately I have learned very little from this class.

Comment:

Dr. Winner is not very enthusiastic or excited about what he teaches, so it all comes off as monotonous and very boring. It does not encourage attendance, so the class is usually empty. Most of the time is spent intensely writing math equations and code, but no time is spent analyzing what each topic/method means in practice. Wouldn't recommend.

Larry is a really great guy, and most prominently he is a genius. He cares about his students and is extremely fair in his grading. His class is hard, and he teaches at a pretty high level. But his class is also a lot of fun if you come prepared and participate. He may be a bit difficult but he really knows his stuff, and he's funny too.

Went to his office hours a couple times and when I asked if i could get help, he groaned and responded with, "Fine....". If he wasn't requited have his door open in office hours, it would be locked. Clearly doesn't care about his students.

Makes it perfectly clear he doesn't care about his students. Never spends time in his office and never makes himself available to students outside the 50 minutes he's required to. Just not a very kind person.

He's useless. Don't bother going to lecture. I really like stat, but he makes it boring. Getting an A is very doable. Make really good formula sheets for the exams and read the book. Really try not to take him though - if possible.

Try to avoid him. All he does is writing fomulas on the board. I love stat. But he makes it so boring that I have no desire to go to lecture. Don't like his website either. Trying hard to teach myself now.

If you are taking this class do it with another teacher. This guy makes it so much harder than it needs to be. doesn't teach, just writes formulas on the wall. He doesn't have a study guide and doesn't know how to use ISIS and has us go to this silly website and download this complicated code that if your not familiar with then god help you.

It's clear: do NOT take his classes. I'm a motivated grad student that wanted to learn stats; got a B in the class NO thanks to him. I taught myself, which is sickening with how much we pay per class. He's disinterested, has no patience and snaps at students. The few times he actually asked a question to see if we got it, u could hear a pin drop.

Unless you "speak" statistics, don't take his class. Basically I have to teach myself, & since I don't have time to do that, so I'm not doing well. You'll walk out of class having learned very little. The only benefit: the bonding you get when you turn to a complete stranger & ask, "did you get any of that?!" Also: his TAs are worse than him.

Wants you to use computer code to complete all assignments but never teaches code. It's really stressful and I have no idea what has happened in clas the minute I walk out the door. I basically am teaching myself the material out of the book. Nice guy but the class is TERRIBLE. Would not recommend.

No, he doesn't really teach very well. and yes, all he does is post equations on the board one after another. the thing with his class, is he wants you to work out a lot of equations that SAS does for you automatically, so its kinda pointless. I don't think he was as bad as other people make him out to be. He gives practice exams which are helpful

One of the worst teachers I've had. There's no actual "teaching" going on in that classroom. He lectures word-for-word out of the book, but never actually refers to the book. He's impossible to follow, his lecture is completely convoluted. You won't learn a thing from him, you're on your own. Avoid this teacher!! Take the class with someone else!

Sure doesn't seem to like teaching. Also true that it is one formula after another, basically he copies the book on the board. However he does post old tests and can be helpfull when he feels like it. Can also be a jerk...be ready to work if you take him

Only come to class if you want to see one formula after another. Thank god for the book. You should know how to use SAS or SPSS before taking this class!
