Comment:
Easiest and best hist 202 professor at BYU. All the information you need for tests is given in his lectures, most of his ta's are helpful, and he gives you the questions before the test. The only small complaint I have is his voice is a little monotone. Just study your notes and make sure you understand the test questions. Too bad he's retiring.

Thorp is an expert at the material he teaches. I took from him fall and winter semesters. I found that by going in and just chatting with him and talking to the TA a lot really helped my grade. Just be kind; he doesn't do well with smart alecs! I learned a lot in the class and ended up really enjoying the lectures.

Dr. Thorp knows a lot about history, but has issues getting his point across. The class has potential, but is so unorganized that you never really know what is expected, and the tests are graded subjectively by his TAs. You'll learn a lot, but your GPA might suffer from it...

Thorp is funny. He has a good sense of humor, and can lecture about the topic without powerpoints or anything. His exams are essay based, but he gives you questions to prepare beforehand, and there are review sessions. Attendance is taken with an iclikcer. Reading is important because he gives pop quizzes. I enjoy this class, though!

Not a very difficult class. I got an A and didn't have to do much, other than cram before the exams. The tests are essay form. The TA is worthless. He demands perfection from students, but then gets questions wrong on his own quizzes, doesn't respond to e-mails, and won't post any grades until 2 days before the end of the semester. Pray for no TA.

I got an A- and I didnt read too much. However I did study pretty hard when he gave the study guides out a week before each test. If you have a borderline grade he will bump you up if you have good attendance.

Nice guy but scattered. Read the book and do the study guide. Notes were all over the place but it did reinforce some of the reading. He's very decent.

Everyone needs to lay off Dr. Thorp! He wasn't that bad. If you pay attention and TAKE NOTES, the tests are not that hard. He is a decent teacher and is passionate about what he teaches. Everyone who hates him probably didn't take notes/show up to class and are carrying a C average gpa. Don't complain if you didn't put in the work!

He is so scatter brained. I could never figure out what the crap he was talking about. He knows his history but he does not know how to organize it all. His tests are decent. I got a B in the class when I feel like I should have gotten an A in the class. Not a very hard teacher, dont take him if you dont like writting essays.

He is very unorganized and can be scatterbrained. He definitely knows his stuff, but sometimes he would talk about things that no one ever needs to know... I could never really figure out what I needed to know. TA's grade all the tests. Pretty easy to get a good grade because you get test questions beforehand, but he can be a frustrating professor.

He is so BORING. His lectures make no sense. The one good thing is that he doesn't assign homework besides reading. His tests aren't very hard, just do the study guide and you should do fine. Don't take this class, biggest waste of time!

He is a good guy but his class is very unorganized. I could never get what the main idea was that he was trying to get across in every lecture. I am very interested in history and found this class to be difficult because of the amount of facts and info given that was not necessary. A good man though and grades easily and fairly

Multiple choice quizzes were ambiguous & could be interpreted in more than one way. It became a matter of semantics rather than an evaluation of what I learned. Often I referred back to the textbook & saw that my answer was correct, which meant the quiz may have had typos. This is the only class where I felt I did A work and received a B.

If you don't like memorizing tons of information and writing essays for exams (no multiple choice) don't take his class. He knows his stuff, but sometimes he is very scatter-brained and he's really really boring.

I would never take a course from Professor Thorp again. I felt like he just wanted everyone to know that he knows more than you. Every student comment is incorrect and his opinion is always right. Doesn't come off like he cares about students at all. Even though it is easy, I wouldn't take it again.

Woa, everyone is WAY too harsh on professor Thorp. I enjoyed him, tests are hard, but that is only because the TA grades them, the TA is a hard one, but he is leaving soon. You have to go to class because tests are totally based off lecture, but everything I checked out, his statments and dates were correct. I enjoyed his class, I found him funny.

Professor Thorp should retire. He's the most scatter-brained, senile teacher I've ever had. He told the class Mt. St. Helen's erupted in 1990, he mixed up the names of colonizers in Africa, he said that in the Battle of the Some in WWI, Gen. Haig attacked at "6 PM in the morning". Despite questions from students, he kept making these mistakes.

The class isn't too difficult, but it may be painful along the way. He has a scheduling problem, so he tends to give a bunch of quizzes at the end of the semester (after he realizes that he hasn't been giving them all semester long). Tests aren't horrible, though. They are very easy if you go through his study guide.

This class was useless. I agree with everything everyone's said about the TA - definitely some problems with relating to people. Teacher got dates wrong all the time, he only offered EC b/c first test scores were low, lectures were incredibly rehearsed and choppy. I've got an okay grade, but this was my worst class this semester.
