very disorganized and unprepared. spending half of the lecture playing videos, exam based on a single student's opinion in a random class.

Great professor, very knowledgable. His lectures are clear and easy to understand, but are in no way simple. Professor Cheng's grading's harsh but fair--he sets high standards of success. Visit him after class, talk with him, learn from him, and you will not regret taking his courses.

Boring lecture but you better attend class b/c there's 10% attendance mark. simply find information from the internet for the debate n you will be fine. essays are not hard either, you can basically copy things from the internet for take home essays and you will get like 80%. However, taught almost nothing throughout the course

Comment:
THE most useless class: he repeats himself repeatedly in both English and Chinese as if we can't understand one of the languages. The only reason why I go to class is because he takes attendance. It's frustrating to me how a teacher at his teaching level could even become a prof.

Comment:
Format of class not useful for familiarizing students with speaking or writing Chinese at all. Favoritism towards those students in the class whose Chinese are already at a high level. No instruction before the presentations, yet criticizes students subjectively afterwards. Cannot take criticism at all; gets defensive, abrasive. Very disappointing

If one is studying this course more than just credits, then this is the prof that you want to be with. Class environment is fun, lots of questions to trigger independent thoughts, and he has no accent of dialegts, perfect Mandarin. Class average is 77, he scales up after the TA marks.

Let me start by saying that I am not a keener. The course that I am taking is Advanced Chinese: Readings in Modern Chinese Prose and Fiction. I like his way of teaching very much because he encourages his students to think critically. I am doing well in this class despite of not partcipating in discussion all the time.

This course = 4 presentations + 3 compositions + showing up mark. Super slack if you don't want homework (which you don't get anyways) and get a good mark. Sucks that the arts dept has a policy of never giving students over 85%. He actually knows a lot about Western & Chinese lit. if you like it.
