Take her class! Prof B truly cares about her students. I came to the class with little knowledge about Roman history, but this became my favorite class of the semester. Participation took 50% of the grade, but this was negotiable. There were no midterms or finals but only a final paper. You would receive a good grade as long as you put into effort.

Professor Boatwright is the sweetest woman I have ever met. She cares so deeply about all of her students. She is very relaxed and understanding. She does assign a good amount of readings, but they are usually pretty interesting. I would 100% take another class from her; she is the best!

Professor Boatwright gives really interesting lectures, however grading criteria for papers can be obscure. Overall she is very passionate about Roman History and also a very knowledgeable and kind.

Had Roman History and loved it! Not a classics or history major, but I still loved every second. BEST class I took my freshman year! Class was challenging at times but very fair. If you are thoughtful with paper and project prompts, you will do well. Very helpful outside class!

Class is completely based on primary sources and lecture in class. Prof. Boatwright is a very nice and clear with her expectations, but the lectures are dry and hard to follow. I rarely did the readings because they are very dense and boring, which made the midterm difficult. The group projects are easy and the papers are not graded too hard.

Lovely person and extremely passionate about her subject. Not so sure about the reviews down there, but she seemed to really know her stuff. HOWEVER, I will say that taking this class for a T-Req when you're more of a sciences guy can really be painful. Don't make the same "Oh Roman History, might be cool" mistake I did. Great for some, not for me.

I couldn't agree more with the poster below. This class is absolutely ridiculous and I'm a classics major for heaven's sakes! We didn't go over AT ALL one entire THIRD of the final exam ever in class, if that tells you anything. Lovely person though, but mediocre teacher

Worst teacher I've had at Duke. Makes you memorize pointless facts for tests like the times emperors ruled and also makes you pick out from a list of unknown passages you read throughout the year and come up with the author. Her papers are also retarded, having you write about the difference between the 10 page summary and the 200 page Roman text

Knows little or nothing about late antiquity, its all hadrian, hadrian, hadrian. little emphasis on primary texts, which is disturbing given she's in classics. despite being one of 10 majors during her chairmanship, she always called me john, when that is so far away from what my name is its not funny.

Knows little or nothing about late antiquity, its all hadrian, hadrian, hadrian. Department did not flourish under leadership. No emphasis on primary texts which for a classicist is disturbing. i was one of about 10 classics major and she always called me by last name, i think, believing that it was my first. The journal entry assn is just sad.

Sweet lady, genuinely cares about teaching, seems intelligent... That said, she's so boring you'll want to rip your face off during class just to spice things up. She's a very inconsistent grader, but you'll end up with around a B+ probably.

Lectures were really, really boring. When I have trouble sleeping at night, I think back on some of her classes. She tries to be enthusiastic, but it just doesn't work. She's as nice as can be, though, and her grading isn't too tough. The TA's this semester were really incompetent. I don't know how these people got into a PhD program at Duke.
