I really liked Prof Payne. Overall great class, although sometimes went on tangents during lecture, he almost knows TOO much about Russian History. However he's always very thought provoking and learn something each class. One complaint is way too much reading, but most of it not tested or evaluated on.

Though Professor Payne didnt lecture very often for his HIST100 course, he participated in discussions and made guest lecturers clarify info that may not be common knowledge for undergrads. I skipped this class the least out of genuine interest of the topics he chose. There was only two essays, but they were relatively easy. Highly recommend, 10/10

Payne is very engaging and funny. Though he doesnt technically teach the class and instead you speed date the history professors, you gain so much perspective on various topics historians study, inspiring my pursuit as a history major of the possibilities I can study. Payne is great and the class has something everyone can enjoy. A must-take!

Professor Payne is very good at incorporating humor into his teaching. In this class, there are a variety of lecturers, though Payne always does an introduction and is responsible for grading. He is very friendly and always looks for participation in the discussions. I imagine he is tougher in non-intro classes.

Professor Payne is a great guy that I really respect. He takes time to give thoughtful feedback to every student. HIST100 is unlike any class I've taken before, but I was surprised with how much I enjoyed it. If you don't love history but need the credit (like me), I recommend this course. Payne makes the class more enjoyable than work heavy.

Dr. Payne is a passionate and funny lecturer who makes the material interesting and the class enjoyable. He expects a lot of reading and writing but its the type of class where if youre willing to put in the work, its very rewarding. Hes also very accessible outside of class. Definitely one of my favorite professors at Emory.

Payne is one of the best professors in the history department and at emory overall. Lots of work in class, but if you pay attention in the lectures you can skim. I knew literally nothing about Russia beforehand and left the class almost as interested in it as he is. Great lectures, great conversations outside of class, great coverage of material

Amazing professor! He truly cares about his students and loves to help. He is extremely knowledgeable (ask him anything, and he can probably answer). Great class discussion - participation is a big part of what you get out of the class. He's super inspirational - get ready to pick up some life lessons. Would totally recommend!

Special topics in history with Dr. Eckert was sometimes interesting, but I personally did not find Dr. Payne's lectures to be that engaging. This isn't a continued writing class but they graded your papers too harshly. Dr. Payne can be somewhat confusing sometimes but can be helpful during office hours.

Great professor. Obviously really cares about the subject that he teaches. Despite his name, "Dr. Payne", he is incredibly friendly and very willing to help you. Can't write? Dr. Payne will make you a better writer. Don't be afraid of the subject matter. You'll have to read a lot, but you'll learn a lot and have fun while doing it.

Dr. Payne is very passionate about Russia and very engaging. Good lecturer, but he likes to add hyperbole sometimes. Lots of reading and writing, but he's willing to work with you on everything. Great survey of Russia!

Initially took this just for the GER's. Came out with a new appreciation for Russia and everything it represents. Payne's a very interesting/knowledgeable lecturer and you'll barely notice how fast the class goes until he finishes. Assigns a substantial amount of reading but they're well worth the effort. Tough, but fair grader.

If you have a chance to take one of Payne's classes, do not pass it up. He makes you work for the grade, but his lectures are interesting and knowledgeable. Expect lots of reading; this is not an easy class, but it's worth it!

One of the best professors I have had at Emory. Completely willing to work with you. The papers are long and the responses are numerous, but deadlines are moveable (I turned in my last 5 reading responses 5 weeks late and still received an A.) The oral final is nowhere near as bad as you think it will be. Really just a great teacher.

Payne's class isn't hard if you do what's required. There's a good bit of writing but nothing too drastic. Payne's really passionate about his material which makes the class much more interesting; he's also more than willing to help you understand the material. If you turn in everything & attend the lectures, you'll be more than fine.

Excellent teacher that has a lot of knowledge. A lot of reading, like 500 pages a week, but you learn a lot.
