Comment:
Dr. Ravvin is one of the two best professors i've had at Concordia. If you engage in class, and do your readings you'll get the most out of it. Always at his office hours and more than willing to help guide students along the topics discussed in the course. He brings life and interest to really difficult subject matters, and gets your mind working!

Norman is very particular. Hes a nice guy but gives 5 mini essays of over 1000 words and makes them worth 10-15%. Hard marker and does not express what exactly he wants from the students. Also his final exam is long and covers all books read over the semester. After the exam a final 8 page paper is due 3 days later. It is alot of material.

Ravvin is one of the best professor's I've had at Concordia. People who engage and are willing to learn will enjoy his enthusiasm and perspectives on class material. He does not tolerate slackers who use technology so if you are going to sit and use Facebook, don't bother coming to class. I was not interested the whole time, but it was worth it!

Comment:
The material was a mixed bag. Depending on your interests you might find some parts more interesting than others. A few short films. There is an overall tendency to focus on Eastern Europe which was fine with me. Only a slight focus on France and Germany. A lot of literature that requires delving into.

Comment:
Prof Ravvin is a nice guy he is just super boring. Participation is worth 10% in this class and that includes attendance and participation in lectures. However, its pretty hard to engage in material that has no appeal to anyone in the class except the 6 people who's ages range from 45-80.

Comment:
He is very emotionally involved with the material. Plus side is that he is very knowledgeable on the subject and encourages you to be involved in the conversation and voice your opinion. He is overly hesitant about trying to understand the motivations of the persecutors.

Norm is the best professor I've had. He goes out of his way to make sure the material is understood. He makes everything really interesting, and he is excellent at engaging the class. He really cares about his students and his work, his class is the best. Love this guy!!

Second time I've taken a class with Norm and can say he's one of the best profs at Concordia. Organized, direct and extremely knowledgeable. Don't take this class if you want to screw around as he calls you out on it, but you can easily get a decent grade if you pay even moderate attention.

Great teacher, accommodating, passionate about the subject matter, very involved in the community about which he teaches. There is a heavy focus on religion, so lit majors may have some trouble, but he's eager to help you as long as you show you're willing. Detests those who daydream or screw around on their laptops, so be prepared and attentive.

Norm's expectations are not clear and neither are the thematic lines he draws throughout the course. This is listed as an English course but the TA is a religion student and therefore unfit to grade English essays. The lectures are interesting but the work is definitely not. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!

This prof is useless, seriously. when i had him, he was absent for most my class, never taught efficiently, since his TA taught the course. (side note the TA is a idiot grader). the only thing i enjoyed was the old and stupid indie films shown in class and bringing my friend to accompany me, in order to avoid the boredom in his class!

His class is a piece of cake. Read the books, and respond to his essay questions. Sad thing is he just rambles on.. In this class your on your own. So take the book and read it twice! The book will teach the course to you. Just sit back and wait for the exam essay questions... Class time is a big waste. Spend your time reading the books!

Likes his own ideas. Small classes --great subject but individual participation very limited. Classes could be made more thoughtful and full of interesting up-to-date readings both from the past and present --interacted with current stories.

this guy is great. goes out of his way to encourage discussion as opposed to straight lectures. chooses great material and actually talks to you like a person as opposed to a teacher, which, strangely enough, makes it easier to learn.

A very inconsistent grader: will pass any dunce but giving A's seems to threaten him. An energetic lecturer, but his scholarly work is dull and self-involved.
