Comment:

Professor Jipsen very clearly loves math and encourages students to think critically about how it works rather than take calculations for granted. It was very refreshing to learn math in this way! Despite difficult material, his lectures are easy to follow, for the most part. Tons of homework, but that is to be expected, and it's all very helpful.

Comment:

I love Professor Jipsen. He is so adorable. He has an interesting accent, wears paisley shirts everyday, and longboards around campus. He is a very smart man so he has a lot to teach but doesn't always do it in the best way. Sometimes he has some interesting metaphors which do not relate to math at all, but overall great professor.

Jipsen is an awesome guy and very understanding. if you need a dealine moved he will move it. However, there is ALOT of deadlines because there is so much homework. theres only one midterm and a final. Calc is a hard subject making this a hard class. He gets off topic alot because he loves the subject so much. lecture is hard to understand

Midterm and final exams are worth so much of your grade that it is hard to do well in this class if you don't understand what is going on. Professor is very hard to follow- he didn't provide many examples in his lectures he would just derive formulas and proof things which isn't helpful. I struggled a lot in this class. VERY DIFFICULT CLASS.

I highly suggest Prof. Jipsen. He is a very kind guy, who is absolutely willing to help his students at any time. He is always very understanding if you need more time for assignments and if you don't understand something and don't like your grade, as long as you go to office hours and try to understand he will change it. Great guy!

Jipsen's teaching style is heavily based on theory, which doesn't really help you in doing your homework problems. However, if you go to his office hours he will help you and explain everything thoroughly.

Comment:

The way he teaches is not suitable for everyone's learning style. Going to class was pointless; it never helped me. I felt like I had to teach myself the material through the online homework. However he is very flexible with due dates & such. He means well, but I wouldn't recommend taking him, especially if you don't care that much about math.

He doesn't make so much sense in class... but when you go to his office hours he is extremely helpful. All of the homework and chapter tests are online, which was weird because most people aren't used to doing math on a computer. He gives some extra credit if you write out your homework problems and turn them in. Overall, he is eehhhh.

Comment:

Took Calculus in high school and loved it. Took this class and hated it. Jipsen is a nice guy but he rambles, goes off on tangents and is generally unproductive in class. I learned more just by doing the homework than by listening to his lectures. He offers office hours so he's available for help if you need it.

I've had Jipsen for a few classes now and I have to say he is one of my FAVORITE math teachers. While I may not understand all of the material, I still recommend him. He is a very sweet man who is eager to help you and just wants you to succeed. His style of teaching is very focused on why things are the way they are, so there are a LOT of proofs.

The best math teacher ive ever had. I say this because i visited him often during office hours, to go over the hw that was often difficult, and he taught me everything that i needed to know in simple terms that i could understand. He was very nice and very helpful. hw takes a solid hour or more to do and exams are like the hw.

i had taken calc before in high school, but the way he teaches doesn't make sense to me. he does a lot of proofs, but he allows you a cheat sheet for tests which really helps. nice guy, but not the best teacer.

Calc 1: Nice guy, good teacher. Very understanding. Always willing to help, even through emails at 10pm at night. Unfortunately I went to every class, math lab, and got tutoring but still received a C because I am a terrible test taker. Still, I highly recommend him.

i didnt really love the class just because im terrible at understanding calc. but jipsen is good at explaining especially during one on one help. hes pretty relaxed and willing to work with you and help you out. homework online is great and bookwork is just extra credit if you want

Comment:

Cares a lot about his students understanding the material. His philosophy is to teach students WHY things work as he teaches them instead of just saying "This is how you solve these problems. Know how to do it for the test." It's great for someone who wants to understand math, not just solve some problems in a book.

Sometimes absent-minded, but what good math teacher isn't? Jipsen explains everything (everything) to the fullest extent possible so that his students understand exactly WHY things in Calculus are the way they are. He definitely cares a lot about his students. Online homework's easy if you pay attention. Tests, too, if you have good formula sheets.

Jipsen explains everything well and fully. The homework is very reasonable--about ten problems a week, done online so you never have to worry about getting the problems wrong-you have unlimited tries. The tests are fairly difficult but if you've done the homework and pay attention, it shouldn't stress you out much if you are at least decent at math

He's the best math teacher I've ever had. Most calculus teachers, especially in high school, shove "procedures" and "formulae" that must be excruciatingly memorized down students' throats. Jipsen has a passion for math and explains CALCULUS from the ground up so you really understand WHAT you are doing and WHY, instead of just HOW to solve problems
