Charismatic so class wasn't boring and kept me awake. Can be a difficult grader (for example gives 93 out of 100 for 10 point questions) but overall seems to be a fair grader. His tests, in terms of the materials and questions they cover, are just like any other human core teachers.

Barbe seems like he would be a good teacher outside of Humcore, but he wasn't clear enough in Humcore. It helps to go to his office hours if you present your ideas and ask for his feedback, but otherwise he isn't very clear about what he wants. Has an intense and complicated grading system for essays and tests.

I agree with the previous comment...he is a horrible discussion leader and the best way to get a good grade in this class is to switch discussion sections as soon as you can! Very capricious...would supports essay ideas and then grade differently. Plus, he smells like smoke 24/7...yuck.

Word of wisdom when approaching this course with Barbe: 1. get out of the class immediatly. if you are unable to do this for whatever reason, 2. stay away from original ideas (use your essays to repeat word for word what Barbe says in class). 3. bring a laptop to class (i highly recommend jezzball.net). Amazingly well-read! (in French & English lit.)He is a treasure of a resource and very approachable. An ideal professor who is an expert in his discipline as well as in how to TEACH it...very rare among UCI professors. He actually WANTS his students to succeed and gives them the tools to do so. The icing on the cake: he's hilarious!
