Comment:
Hume is good at his job, and he tries and succeeds to be fair. He gets a bad rap because he's a little condescending, but he's a good professor who has high but not unrealistic expectations. I respected the guy more than I liked him, so don't expect to be BFFs, but as long as you're willing to put in the work, you'll have no cause to hate him.

He's a challenging professor. He tests you on a lot of useless information like Nobel Prize winners, but he has a great appreciation for the subject and is an absolute genius. The dude is wicked smart but has trouble explaining concepts to undergraduate students. That being said, he's always willing to help and cares a lot about student success.

I 100% understand why so many students don't like Dr. Hume- his exams are very hard, he's a bit arrogant, and has awfully high expectations for an undergrad course. However, he acknowledges the difficulty of the class, so he gives a lot of extra credit to help. It's in your best interest to stay on top of material, especially for the pop quizzes.

Dr. Hume is the most caring professor and intelligent professor that I have had at Michigan. His classes are hard, but he is very knowledgeable in the field of Neuroscience and you learn a lot.

Probably the worst professor I've ever had. Adds a lot of random, unrelated peripheral information that isn't interesting. Has a total hard on for Nobel Laureates. Avoid this professor at all costs, he's a smart guy but very socially awkward and is a very very bad professor. Emphasizes experiments done like 70 years ago over relevant info.

Professor Hume is very intelligent, and willing to help students who are struggling if the student is proactive. He likes to test Nobel Prize winners, but these questions are easier than content questions and provide interesting context for class. He really wants his students to work hard for their A. Going to office hours every week helps.

Refused to raise grade when I was 1 point away from an A-. That should give you an indication of how he thinks about his students and how willing he is to help.

Richard Hume is a extremely smart professor BUT is also very arrogant and condescending. He wants students to ask questions during class but gets mad if he thinks the question is not good. His voice is pretty annoying. His exams are difficult and you will need to study and memorize a lot of minor details. He also loves noble peace prizes.

Like most others covered, he is arrogant and rude. If you get an answer wrong dont expect to be let down easy. Also he has a thing for Nobel prize winners. So he makes you memorize their names and work. But he is obviously great as a researcher, hes smart and a good mentor. If you really care, take this class. Looking for an easy/medium A, dont!

Comment:
Professor Hume's Bio 222 is about applied science. His lectures are only supplemental to the book and to office hours. Both the textbook and office hours are essential to doing well. Does he seem arrogant? A little. But if you look past that you are looking at a professor that is both willing and available to help you out with the material.

Dr. Hume is very knowledgeable about Neuroscience, and passionate about the subject. The class emphasizes you why you are learning what you are learning, and Hume always provides clear evidence with any claim he makes. Because of this you have a deeper understanding of the material, and aren't simply forced to accept facts" at face value.

Dr. Hume made this 200 level intro neuro class more like an advanced research methods 400 level class. His slides were never well enough explained for what was needed to know for the exams. Exams were ridiculously difficult and he will explain how he purposely makes his exams challenging so a low average is achieved that he can curve only a liltle

Great class and great professor. Very knowledgeable and helpful, especially outside of class. Neuroscience is an extensive and difficult subject; accordingly, so is the class. Nevertheless, this class was able to make the material enjoyable and very educational.

I have never had a worse professor than Hume. He doesn't teach, he merely regurgitates studies that have been conducted in the past. He is obsessed with Nobel Peace Prize winners and expects us to know every single winner (sometimes 14 per exam). His exams are very difficult. And as stated previously, he is very unclear in lecture- mumbling mostly.

Comment:
Worst professor I've ever had. He does not speak clearly most of the time, mumbles a lot, and then moves onto the next slide. Exams are extremely difficult and sometimes have nobel prize winners, which is useless. Does not give clear answers to anything. He has a very annoying voice and his lectures are disorganized. Puts too much info on slides.

He was a horrible professor. When I went to his office hours, instead of being helpful he made me feel like an idiot because I didn't understand a concept. His exams are ridiculously difficult, to the point that I had no hope of doing better. He always wanted people to answer his questions in class but made them look dumb if they were wrong.

Comment:
Bio225 is not a good indicator of how he is as a professor. After taking him for MCDB 351 and 453, I can honestly say that he is probably the most amazing professor I had at UofM. He really knows his material and genuinely wants his students to do well. It's really just a matter of getting to know how he teaches and how he picks his valuable facts.
