Comment:
Expert on everything East Africa. This is my 3rd course with Dr. Maxon and I've loved each one. Even though attendance in not mandatory, GO TO CLASS. His lectures may be monotonous, but they're extremely helpful. The book is useful to study too. He gives study guides with key words and the essay questions and then uses them for the test.

He is a very cut and dry professor. He had the information down to a T but I had a rough time sitting through his long, monotone, lectures. He gives pop quizzes which can make or break your grade. There is one paper, easy A, and three exams that are very tough for a 100 level course. If I had to do it again I would pick a different Professor.

Taken 3 courses with Dr. Maxon. Although he has an old school lecture style, he's unbelievably knowledgable about all things East African History. He's always available to discuss class material and grades with you as well. He gives you study guides for he tests, but its up to you actually study. Attendance isn't necessary, but extremely helpfu

Dr. Maxon is so cool. He's extremely knowledgable about East Africa. His lecture style is very "old school" though - he just gets up in front of the room and talks for 50 minutes. Tests were really easy if you studied (he gives study guides). I would take a class from him again in a heartbeat.

Grades come from 1 paper, 3 non-cumulative tests, and several pop quizzes. All of the material comes straight from his lectures, which are incredibly clear. Some of them can be a bit dry. The pop quizzes are very surprising sometimes, but if you pay attention in class, they're easy. Incredibly knowledgable man. Recommended.

I'm not sure if other students "get" how much of a value Maxon is to WVU but I am here to say that you are missing probably the most renown East African historian if you don't pay attention while your're in his class. His knowledge of East African history rivals many profs IN EAST AFRICA. Please take advantage of this wise old man while you can.
