This course (Germans and Jews) was the highlight of my Oberlin career. By far the best course I've taken in my entire life. I strongly urge any JWST majors, History majors, or German majors to enroll.

Top two best professors at Oberlin. Shulamit is an amazing, brilliant and passionate scholar, and a gifted professor to boot. I loved my class with her, and I hope I get the chance to take another! She's called a tough grader, but really she just expects you to actually engage with the ideas, not just regurgitate. I learned so much in her class.

Shulamit is one of the best professors I've ever had. Her rigor in her research and her pedagogy is matched only by her devotion to her students. As a grad student, I still refer back to things I learned in her course--200 level, but functionally a seminar. (PS. ratemyprof: easiness as a component of overall quality kind of misses the point.)

The work Professor Magnus puts into her courses inspires excellent work from her students. Her classes challenge but never exceed her student's abilities to meet her expectations. If you seek her out, she is a wonderful mentor. She is one of the most devoted and sharp professors at Oberlin.

Comment:
Magnus knows her stuff and does a very good job of conveying complicated material in an interesting way. The reading is excessive and esoteric, but you come out of the class with far more knowledge and understanding of Jewish people because Magnus does such a good job creating class discussions and lectures about the material. Take her class.

Boring, talks about nothing, gives too much reading just to hear her talk for the entire class. Unless you love Jewish History, I wouldn't take this class.

Probably the best professor I've had at Oberlin. She has a breathtaking scope of knowledge and every lecture is packed with coherent information. Her classes are the reason I became a religion major!

Very clear and engaging lecturer, great personality. Assigns a bunch of reading. Tends to grade in terms of retention of the themes she's emphasized in class lectures.

her voice is very nasal... that said she looks like mrs. robbinson from the graduate, which is a definite plus. i took the final after staying up for 2 days and thought i saw smoke pouring into the room... i got a B+. not bad.

great class! her lectures were very informative and clear - she really knows her stuff. the reading load is impossible, but it is good to do as much as you can. i also cannot believe how much i actually learned - and retained - from this class. it was a wonderful addition to my semester.

Great professor, not particularly accessible (maybe b/c it was an intro class?) but assigned (A LOT) of really useful reading. I can't believe how much I learned in this class, and how much I've retained. You have to put in the work though.

A lot, lot, lot of reading is required, especially for an intro class. Good professor, but it's a heavy workload.
