Comment:

Fashion Illustration is all about personal style. This teacher does NOT understand that. It's her way or the highway which makes it for a very non-creative and militant class. She is bare minimum all the time! Like she isn't even there. She hates the book because it's not the one she wrote and makes you suffer for referencing it. Do not recommend!

I was a student of Ms. Zarate back in 1988. I could draw but not that well. Ms. Zarate was a great teacher who really took pride in teaching her students. She was tough, but that only because this industry is tough. I thank her for what she has tought me.

Miss Mudgway/Zarate/whatever is not a mean person, but she's not a very good teacher either. She has her students watch her draw but doesn't really explain anything. If you've never drawn before, DO NOT take her Sketching I class! But if you have, you'll probably be alright. She's a tough and biased grader though.

If you are a natural at drawing this is a class for you. She is a wonderful illustrator and is very creative. She doesn't spend too much time helping. So if you struggle and don't have the skills, don't take it personal, she wants you to be the best. I took all 3 of her classes, even though I didn't do A work.

she is the best sketching teacher. ive had her since sketching 1 and 2. Now, i am taking her again for technical sketching. she wants the figures in a certain way but theyre very proportional. not anorexic. she is straightforward and is serious about sketching. over all, shes great, strict and creative. VERY creative.

I have had her for Sketching I and now Technical Sketching. She refuses to use the books, which may have something to do with an underlying issue with Riegelman, whom I had for Sketching II and she was phenomenal. Zarate neglects her students who need her the most. I have not gotten help for her, just criticism, not constructive.

She's an amazing teacher, my technique has improved so much after taking her class. She knows what she's talking about and see work with the insiders, designing for movie such as Hannah Montana, Batman and Robin, A.I, and even was a costume designer for the back up dancers for Michael Jacksons tour. If you want to be that best at sketching TAKE HER

Typically I'm not one to post on these sites but after reading the reviews on Zarate I thought it was necessary. She is an AMAZING teacher, she knows what she's talking about, and she has many connections in the fashion industry! You best believe I registered to take her class for sketching II! :)

Her drawing skills are impressive, but her teaching skills need a lot of work. We did not even touch the textbook. What a waste of money. She just did demos, and thought a photocopy of it would be good for us to learn from. I am taking this class over with Riegelman, the author of the textbook. Take Riegelman!!!

She's nice enough and does try to help. Fact is I have yet to hear of a single good teacher for sketching at FIDM. She is really fair, she passed me even though I had poor sketches because of my previous teacher's failure to help me learn the basics.

i would not reccomend this teacher. DEFINITELY BETTER THAN ARMSTRONG THOUGH. she wastes the whole class grading everyones work in front of everyone in the class. takes way too long to do the demo. very hard grader...every week she would tell me i was getting better but still give me the same grade as last week. unencouraging.

I have no idea why people are saying she isn't helpful. I work a full time job and my homework was really suffering because I was never able to attend the week day labs. She went out of her way to petition for a Saturday lab for working students. Since then, my sketching has dramatically improved. I would recommend her for sure.

You learn well from hard teachers! Its the industry what do you expect. I love Zarate. She's inspirational and she does favor students, but as a designer you should expect to already know how to draw and sew. She doesn't use textbook at all. You use your own techniques and she will florish it to help you.....Taking her is a MuST!!!!
