No textbook but you have to purchase books. Lessons are boring, you learn about is authors & discuss the stories read (must read every day). There are quizzes if when she flips a coin & its heads. Dont choose unless you need it for your major. Not difficult but not very intriguing. Grade is based on quizzes & 2 exams, no curve, no extra credit.

The class will have pop quizzes according to the coin. The grade is hard and no extra credits. A lot of reading need be finished before every class. The textbook is hard. The professor keeps talking in the class but it is boring if you don't interested in the books.

AES104 with her was pretty straightforward. She assigns a reading, you take a simple 5 question quiz every class based on that reading, then she'll explain the reading further in detail during class. TAKE NOTES. Her midterm and final are all open note so taking good notes (even if you don't understand what you're writing down) will help.

She is really kind, but a strict grader. She does not stray from her syllabus. She also gives out a lot of information during lectures, so go to office hours to answer questions she is more than happy to help to make sure you do the best you can in her class.

Professor Fessler is a great teacher. The only homework for the most part is just doing the readings which you might have a quiz on. She always wants to hear students ideas and theories on readings. The exams are open book open note.

Put in the work (go to class & READ)! She flips a coin every class to see if we have a quiz. The quizzes will take a toll on your grade if you don't show up to class or don't do the readings. Showing up to class will help on understanding of stories for midterm and final. Both exams are open book, so take notes as needed during class.

Terrible class. Excessive amount of work for a Gen Ed. Class is taught by 3 professors different writing styles. She is extremely condescending and not understanding. Willing to help outside of class but tries to prove herself right all the time. An A is a 94. online homeworks are given only 20 minutes and you can't go back to look over your answer

She was a good teacher in my opinion. She expected you to do the readings and flips a coin every day to see whether we have a short quiz on it. They're 5 question multiple choice questions and if you read the reading its obvious. Due to the small class size she actually gets to know you if you participate and knows you by name either way.

Professor Fessler is hands down one of the best profs I've ever had. She's super knowledgeable and will help you with anything you need. Stop complaining about the quizzes, they're super easy. She once put "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" as an answer just to make sure people were PAYING ATTENTION. Which you weren't if you think she's too tough.

Impossible quizzes which will drop your grade so much. Very rude to the students. have to do so much reading and it doesn't even help the quizzes because she picks the slightest details of it

I guess most of the people took her for sources for east Asian literature, that's why they all said it was easy. She teaches japan culture now. The quizzes are very hard to get all right even you read the book. Sometimes you have to read 40 pages and 2 30 mintues videos for it. Tests are ok. But the quizzes hurt your grade a lot.

Professor Fessler is hands-down amazing. (If you're not in the East Asian department you may want to skip any of her classes reason being they are very course specific and she will make you work for your grade.) Very thorough and knowledgeable professor.

Like other posts have said, DO THE READINGS (please). Getting a bad grade on the quizzes can kill your grade big time. She can be a hard grader, but her comments help more than anything. She's a nice lady, but I still wouldn't push her patience. If you sound like you've done the reading, then you will do good in her class. She knows her stuff, too.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE read the readings assigned! She has intermittent quizzes meaning she flips a coin and that would project whether or not you have a quiz that day. Make sure you copy all the notes in class or off ERES because midterm and final is open book. If you have no interest in East Asian Studies don't take class, wont be an easy A.

all her classes are only for those who have absolute interest in japanases literature. if you dont have that much of interest and try to take it for credits ro requirements, do not take this class and find other classes. she has open book exams but very hard on grading.

But she totally just GIVES you a good grade if you write anything on the paper.Quizes are a joke super easy. She's obviously one of the best East Asian teacher here.Anyone who says they didn't get an A probably didn't come to class at all.

The readings can be long and sometimes confusing if you don't know about the subject, but she always tries to make things relatable and fun. The class is ussually a powerpoint and lecture, but she is always welcomming for discussions and questions. Takes attandance and flips a coin for a quiz everyday. 2 ok exams. I loved this class :)

Fessler is really knowledgeable in her field and explains the material clearly with a bit of her passion. Class experience would have been better if I had more interest in the subject but she is nevertheless a fair grader. There are a lot of quizzes but they are easy if you do the reading, although they can be a drudgery sometimes.
