Extremely lazy professor, very unable to explain his own thoughts with less than an Iron Fist. No extra credit; barely regular credit. The teacher was constructing the course as we were studying it, thus we didn't learn anything and he placed the blame on all of us. Lost my 4.0 because of him, and he wouldn't even discuss it with me. Senior

Comment:

Prof. Nathanson really knows how to analyze literature correctly and you'll become more effective, too. There's a lot of busywork online (discussion posts and such), but most of the readings are poems anyway so they don't take too much time. As long as you pay attention in class you'll be fine. I recommend taking Nathanson for 380.

I am not strong in writing analysis. Nathanson made the anxiety dwindle completely. He explains everything so anyone can understand. But if you still have questions he is happy to help.

Probably my favorite class I took at UA. He is very smart, funny, and explains things clearly. This class is pretty small so you can get all the help you need and he will go into detail. Also, love the optional meditation at the beginning of the class! You can miss a few classes and he won't mark you, just don't miss it a lot.

One of my favorite professors I've had. Many students from this class signed up for his ENGL489 class next semester. He helped me refine my ideas and writing. He doesn't assign busy work and will tell you if you are wrong while encouraging you to improve. Great, smart lecturer. Really enjoyable idiosyncrasies. Loved this professor and this class.

If he wasn't rambling, he was spent the whole class reading aloud to us. Made no coherent sense and then expected us to write essays about his lectures. We didn't even use all of the books we had to buy. Stay away from this class!

Nathanson's poetry courses (the three-part American series) were the most enriching part of my time at the U of A, and I was a biology major. Nathanson is an amazing and enthusiastic teacher, and he enabled me to think about a poem on so many different levels. Three years after graduating, I am still so happy I took his classes.
