Comment:
You can learn a lot from Wininger. He sets clear expectations for his students on how to achieve A level work. He definitely changed the way that I approach writing. Only thing I wasn't a fan of was he could get a little loud/ condescending when answering student questions. If you miss a class, see what you missed asap or risk falling behind.

Professor Wininger will teach you a lot about writing and how to look extremely deep into writing/books/etc. You will be doing a lot of writing, papers, and your final grade will likely be based on some sort of final project or portfolio.

Mel is fantastic. He's funny, approachable, DEFINITELY knowledgeable, and very passionate about grammar. If we don't understand something, he explains it without judgement. He does expect us to work, but the work is all fun. Most of us in this class would say this is one of our favorite classes. He is the reason I want to be an editor.

Most of these ratings seem off base; Mel does an excellent job at connecting assignments and provides great feedback! His grading is tough, probably harder for non-English majors. As an English student I have had no problems meeting his expectations. Final portfolio is 75% of your grade which is very intimidating.

Not a bad professor overall. He's an intelligent guy and you can tell that he enjoys sharing his knowledge with students. I learned a lot from his course but I had to make an extra effort to understand what he wanted in the papers. He's extremely vague in his expectations and he grades tough.

Melvin ruled the classroom as if he was a high school teacher. He singled out students and ridiculed them in front of classmates for negligible and deluded reasons. Melvin's condescending demeanor and inept ability to provide clarity on advanced concepts compelled me to drop this class.

IUPUI has many great professors, unfortunately this 'prof' is known to yell at students he doesn't agree with. I love to learn, but his class was a waste of time. Take this class from someone anyone else.

This class will make you not want to be a Writing & Literacy major!!! Harder than any 400-level Eng course - for absolutely NO reason at all!

Very interesting class. Forget anything you thought you knew about grammar. Even though it's not easy, you learn a lot. And he cares a lot (he really wants everyone to do well and learn, but that doesn't mean he's going to make everything extremely easy).

He's a great professor - these ratings seem off to me (sounds like students weren't prepared for college expectations). He creates extremely detailed and clear assignments and syllabi. He'll make you think and question your opinions. You will learn and your writing will improve.

Mel is very intelligent, moderately funny, and extremely vague. Most of the time I have not idea what is going on. When he tells us to write a paper, I think it'll be easy, until I sit down to work on it and I realize I don't know what he actually wants out of us. He presents a lot of great ideas, but fails to connect them to the assignments.

Mel is a great teacher and person. He puts a lot of effort into creating rubrics and assignments. He is very helpful and it is obvious he knows what he is doing and how to help. Overall, I have always loved writing and this class was very enjoyable to me, like others said he does go on tangents but every teacher does.

I would not recommend. He is unprepared and unorganized. He is not clear on any assignment and does not give you any clue as to your grade as the semester goes on. He knows what he is talking about and will go on and on but doesn't explain concepts at all. If the class wasn't required I would have dropped it the first week.

Mel is an awesome professor. He would sometimes go off on tangents sort of related to what we were learning--but definitely related to grammar. The class was not what I expected, but I learned a lot. Looking back, I am glad I took it. There are no stupid questions in his class, and he is always willing to help students.

He's really helpful and super excited about teaching. No question is stupid. Sometimes he goes off on tangents, but it keeps class amusing. He brought pizzas on the last day of class.

Wininger is intelligent, knowledgable, engaging, and slightly eccentric. He is very helpful, but doesn't hand hold. He encourages critical and independent inquiry and work while working within the group in the classroom. Attendance is mandatory, but classes are not boring, they're very helpful to your writing process. If you enjoy writing, I rec!

Comment:
Be prepared to work hard in this class. He is extremely vague in his assignments, I think intentionally, and this forces one to be creative and concise in the articulation of your thoughts. He is a tad anxious to prove his own intelligence and this results in some annoying semantics throughout the semester. My advice is to be firm in your thoughts, work hard, and don't get involved in his tiresome attempts to get unde your skin.

Mel respects having an open mind and a willingness to work. If you put in the effort, he'll be incredibly helpful and you'll probably learn a lot. I don't share his political views, but that didn't affect what I learned or my grades. His directions may be unclear, but as long as you are thinking and working, he'll respect that. Awesome teacher!
