I enjoyed his Russian Literature class and read many books that I would not have otherwise. He is a history professor at heart, so don't expect much deep discussion. What we did discuss was interesting though. His explanations can be obtuse, but he will clarify. As for grading, you don't take a Russian lit class for the grade. Overall, great!

Worst professor I've had at UPS. He clearly has no clue how to teach a course on literature. Spends the majority of the class aimlessly rambling and has difficulty linking his own lectures back to the material. There's so much dense reading and we skim over all of it, yet the exam questions are ridiculously specific. Do not take this course.

Taranovski was the worst prof. I've ever had. He is unclear in his lectures, a difficult grader, and if you don't read the textbook carefully it is hard to do well. I didn't appreciate his many **** comments or the fact that he pushes his students to do better in class by tearing them down. That's not really the best way to motivate people.

Professor Taranovski is the man. I've had him for 4 courses and have gotten B's all the way through. Taking notes during his lectures can be tough because he tells many stories throughout the whole time. If you look at his old test questions the classes arent too brutal, he'll tell you what he is looking for in an exam

He is definitely who I want to be when I get old. He will rant and make obscene jokes at very random times. The trick is to know when to take notes, and when to sit back and listen to his digressions. If you can master that, you'll do just fine.

he's brilliant but the man can't teach. he basically sits there and reads off his notes, and he doesn't have any papers or anything to cushion your grade so the quizzes are brutal, if you didn't read the text very carefully there is like no way that you can pass.

By far the worst professor I've had at UPS. He obviously knows his stuff, but cares less about teaching and more about telling the class how long his Harvard Ph.D. thesis was. Gives no feedback on writing assignments; consistently gave me a B on all assignments, no matter the quality.

He is definitely an old school teacher. Take his harsh comments and jokes during class lightly. He requires a lot of reading, which I recommend doing. Skimming is normally efficent though since he talks about it in class.

Taranovski seems a bitter old man, but he's a good prof. He's "old school"--no discussion--and claims to grade accordingly. Though his ssay exams are quite difficult, if you write thorough papers and follow instructions he'll grade generously.
