Dr. Russell is one of my favorites at SCSU! He is passionate about the music and gives interesting assignments. He is old school and comes from a time of respect and good manners, so if you want to play around and not do your work, he will lose patience with you fast. Music History was fun and relatively easy.

Anyone who thinks this class is hard should drop out of college. Midterm/Final Exam questions are ONLINE. YOU JUST HAVE TO REMEMBER THEM. He tells you what you need to learn for the listening section a week prior to the test. His humor is dry and he has low patience, but if you actually show you care, he'll respect you and you'll enjoy the class

I took MUS110 in Spring 09. The class is extremely boring and sometimes the music he plays gets really annoying. The class is easy though, he gives you a 10-question multiple choice quiz every week, but all the answers are online - you just have to memorize them. The class can be a bit boring but for the most part it is easy if you do the work (very little to be done) and do well on the weekly quizzes (EVERY answer is online, if you fail those quizzes, you shouldn't be in college), you will be fine. Sit in the back and bring a magazine to read. I got an A. The mid-term and final do require some studying.

He was the WORST professor I have ever had! All he focused on was dates and no musical understanding. I was very sick that winter, & handed him a doctors note, but he still dropped my grade significantly for being absent! My GPA suffered & I'm retaking it with Juliana May who is wonderful! She actually teaches music (vocabulary, concepts, etc.)!

Honestly if you just participate and talk to him everything is smooth sailing. Learn how he works! His midterm and final are all handed to you if you pay attention. Ppl that dont like him are the ones that are failing and havent learned. Do the net quizzes and then when you do the review, you find all the q's that will be on the midterm and final!

I know a lot of people say nasty stuff about him...but they're right. He is snotty, sometimes neurotic, and demands that you do reports over and over again until they're absolutely perfect. He makes an interesting class seem dull. If you can, AVOID HIS CLASS! I can only hope he retires soon, so that no one has the experience I had in his class.

Here's the low down on Tilden Russell. He does make you feel stupid if you ask a question...strict on attendance, althought I was out a lot and just brought in notes and sent him emails, he excused them. As for the concert reports? I went to the hall, got a program, left, listened to clips on the internet and wrote it up. Got a check plus. =)

Don't believe the reputation Dr. Russell has. He's not as bad as everyone says he is, though he is somewhat of a perfectionist. Dr. Russell is very interested and passionate about music, and teaches it well. If you're willing to take some interest in the class and do your work, then there's no reason you can't do well in his classes.
