Comment:
This class is extremely pointless. The man literally has no idea what he is teaching and is obsessed with himself. There is no learning involved whatsoever (aside from his dog.) The fact that the class is not an easy A is just ridiculous, and it had the most work out of all of my first year classes.

This professor teaches a public speaking class and he himself is a horrible lecturer and clearly does not know the fundamentals himself.

It's a short class and really not as painful as everyone makes it sound. He's actually pretty nice, but I'd say the TA's do about 90% of the grading, so it's fairly easy to get a good grade. Not a ton of work required either... one quiz, 3 speeches with quick reflections, one 3-5 page paper and the final is only 5% of your grade.

Ahh...Tom Patterson. If you're in CALS, you have to take this class, so you just have to get through it. He will try to scare you, but don't worry about it. Most of your grade is based on speeches that are graded by your TAs-- so develop a good relationship with them, do a good job on your speeches and you're all set.

Him and this class are the reasons why I switched out of CALS. Painfully pointless lectures, worst class I've ever taken. Waste of tuition money. Not to mention he is pompous and unhelpful.

as long as you're not a freshman, he's not intimidating. the class is hilarious and he's a great guy(although he will pick on you if you're young and/or stupid). i enjoy having him

I'm sure he's a good guy outside of class, but lecture is pretty boring, and he seems VERY intimidating...I know it would be hard for me and a bunch of my friends to approach him if we needed it.

Class is boring and pointless, but unfortunately required. Patterson is quite pompous and teaches the class like he's speaking to a bunch of ignorant middle schoolers. Lab is helpful as public speaking is useful to learn, but lecture is downright pointless and Patterson is not an enjoyable person to listen to because he is extremely condescending.

I agree that public speaking is an important skill to have, but this class should be offered to freshman in high school, not college. Patterson thinks that his class precedes anything else and takes attendance to make sure you're there, making him feel that it actually is important.

He is a great professor! Yeah he might be a bit intimidating but he has good intentions. He really makes the class enjoyable and worth taking. He wants his students to really love their college experience and to be prepared for what lies ahead in the future.

Full of him self. I have to say I'm extremely tired of hearing how "great" his class is. A lot of pointless busy work too. Some of the stuff is useful but most of the time I feel like it's just a bunch of random stuff that he feels like talking about.
