The results of our research in this class were published in issue 1 of the Journal of Language and Intercultural Communication. The article mentioned below appeared in 2001 and used to circulate freely but it was deleted. It would be good to review because it was descriptive of today's situation. Check the NAFTA notes and the crystal ball.

I took the sociolinguistics of US Spanish with emphasis on the Mexico-US border. These days U guys can refresh your memory if you read her article: "Spanish language shift reversal on the Mexico-US border and the extended space" . Please review the notes on NAFTA. They are current.

She was more than amazing. She made the hard material easy to understand. We were working with handouts but these days you can review the whole thing if you read her new book on Diversification of Mexican Spanish. It ties the loose ends very nicely.

One of the most advanced courses I took, and I would take again. She knew so much and was enthused about teaching though some of us were not ready for the material. We had 2 major tests, short essays and the final presentation on various Latin American countries. We listened to a lot of tapes and learned to recognize regional varieties of Spanish

We read a lot in this class and had a lot of fun. She was rather lenient with grades and never took the roll. But the articles about US Spanish were enlightening. I use some of her materials in my classes. Also, she brought fancy chocolate for the midterm and the final. It is a good thing you can do if you want your students to concentrate.

We covered pretty good material covering dialect variations in Spain, the Caribbean and South America. Now that I am traveling, I can see the benefits, and even wish I could review with such unusual instructor.

I took this class a few years ago, and I see benefits of having attended a class with a prof. who knows her stuff. A lot of history of the United States, immigrant languages, and pretty sensible practice in Spanish-speaking communities. It made the difference and made my days, too.

I took the course for non-native speakers, where she gave the test for native speakers at the beginning and then at the end of the class. I went from 43 to 71 in one semester. I studied hard to get only 4 points shorter than advanced native speakers. It was worth it!!!
