Dr. Lugo is definitely one of the more intimidating professors I've had, but her class is really good. You'll write a TON of summaries, but her lectures are really great, very informative and entertaining. I was never bored in her class and I always looked forward to it.

Lugo-Lugo is a very interactive professor in lecture. There is a lot of homework in this class, so expect to do a lot of writing. Test (essay based) are easy if you go to class and do the work. Final paper was of your choice. Provide a rough draft and get feedback (best I've gotten from a prof.). Very approachable outside of class with connections!

You will use the textbooks every night. She assigns multiple chapter summaries per week. The lectures are based on the reading assignments from the night before. You will also have to write a paper at the end of the semester and do a final group project about said paper. Don't take this class unless you are very interested in Latino/a culture.

Carmen was an approachable professor, and she made the material interesting and relevant. However, this class is meant for students in the major. A different tier 3 would require far less work. 4 books had to be read chapter-by-chapter with summaries and analysis turned in every class, plus 4 in class writes based on books. Can only miss 2 classes.

Not an easy class by any means. Teacher is clearly passionate about subject matter yet comes across as arrogant at times. The subject is interesting but if one is not interested in the subject they may find it more difficult.

If you need a tier III or you're interested in CES/WST, I would highly recommend 454. It is engaging, interesting, and not too hard. You have to go to class and we use our books almost every day, but they aren't regular textbooks. Keep up with responses, there's 1 paper, but no actual tests. She's a fantastic professor and you will learn a lot.

Carmen is a young and immature professor who does not practice her politics. She is a careerist whose work on popular culture is "Academia Lite".

X-listed w/ENGL 345. Felt like a brutal book club run by a control freak! Lots of reading & busy-writing (synopsis + tiny analysis). Enjoyed the tedious class discussions but writing assignments were not helpful. In-class writing was done in a vacuum. Most concerned about testing whether we read each book. Cultural issues were quickly glossed.

She tries to come off as strict and mean at first, but in reality, she's not. Attendance is mandatory, but you don't do much in class. Do all of the weekly readings and review before the two exams and you will get an A.

I wouldnt recommend this class to anyone. She can be closed minded for a CES instructor and it appears that she sets her students up for failure on tests and in class writing assign.

She is an awesome teacher. Her tests are hard but if you do all of the reading assignments, you should be fine. If you have to take this class take it from her.

Carmen is a great teacher and is well informed on the subjects in class. She's a push-over and she cancelled class probably a third of the time over the course of the semester. It really is easy if you do your weekly journals and study for tests. SInce most people have to take CES, take this one.
