Attend class. Memorize the study guides front to back. Don't take him if you are trying to get your fine arts gen eds out of the way. Grading criteria of papers is strict (seems like he grades based on his style of writing which results is a lot of unnecessary point deductions). Grades tests extremely hard for a 100 level course. Avoid if you can.

Some people think hes a funny guy but he came across as condescending to me. Makes a lot of sex jokes and if you dont go to class you wont find his lectures online

There were several papers to write which was weird for an art class, but they were pretty clear topics and easy As. However, he really marked off for grammar mistakes. Lectures kind of dragged but definitely important to attend for the tests. Tests were long with a lot of information, all that is on the study guide he gives at the beginning.

GO TO CLASS. No slideshows will be posted. If you don't go, you don't get the information. LOOK AT THE STUDY GUIDE AT THE BEGINNING OF THE UNIT. Everything you need for the exam is provided on the guide. Just take really good notes. And holy heck don't use your phone.

I took Dan twice. Once over the summer for a surrealism art history course and then for art nouveau. His tests arent easy by any means and very info heavy but once I took the first test, I got the hang of his expectations. I made an A in both classes.

There were about 5-6 writing assignments, but they were more opinion based and it was easy to get a good grade on them. Stickler for grammar so make sure you have someone proofread it. Definitely study for the tests, the tests were the worst part for me.

Professor Holder is very good and would highly recommend. He is very knowledgeable about art and its history and the lectures are interesting as he discusses and interprets the artwork. Online quizzes from the textbook, a few comprehensive tests, and about 5 papers make up the grades. He doesn't post PPTs on blackboard so go to class to take notes.

Mr. Holder is a great guy. I personally was not a big fan of this class. Other than the final, there are only 2 tests, and everyday you take notes til class is over so the test have a lot of information in them.

I could not stand this guy. Most people who wrote these reviews said that he was funny, but I thought he was obnoxious and condescending. This is a 111 class and I put in more work than I do in my 200-300 level classes just so that he can show everyone how seriously he takes himself. Would not take his class ever again.

Holder is an amazing professor. I loved his lectures. I learned more in this class than in any other class. It's a shame I won't have him again. The class was very easy, but you have to show up to it. There are weekly online open book quizzes that really help cushion your grade.

prepare for D related jokes, not in a dirty way at all though- in a art history everything's phallic kind of way. he has a very dry sense of humor which i really appreciated. hes a great teacher, i enjoyed his classes. either you love him or hate him. i loved him

Mr. Holder was an amazing professor. He is very knowledgeable, and his lectures are very engaging, informative, and intriguing. He covers a lot of different time eras and topics which are very interesting. I enjoyed the projects that he assigned which included an essay on a movie and an "art" project with an interpretive essay. Excellent professor!

Dan Holder is good for that high school to college transition. He's very clear on what he expects from the class and its not hard at all to pass his classes. In his higher level courses, he focuses a lot on sex which can be very interesting but also annoying at times. All around good person and professor.

He is amazing!!!! He’s very kind and doesn’t care if you show up for class (but show up anyway). He keeps your mind going even in the morning class, with jokes and funny stories. I loved him and I’m not even an Art Major.(But study for the exams)

As an art history major, this class is important. I may be biased but the class was very interesting (although I had taken this class in high school already, he had a fresh take on things). The study guide is the test but TAKE NOTES! He's always peppy!
