She is never prepared and waits till last minute for everything. She doesn't give any grades until the last day of the semester so you never know what you are going to get. I have had her for many classes and this rings true for all of them.

SHE'S AWFUL. She gives three projects at once and then spends every class showing us "inspirational videos." One class with her may be bearable, but no more than that. Some of her students drop her classes and others don't bother coming because we know we can get more work done if we don't show up.

Comment:

Basically, if you want to get an "easy A" art class, this isn't the class for you. It's intensive for typography, and it's extremely valuable to those who want to learn about it. Granted, it's not for everyone - but she's there to work with you when you have a tough spot in a project. She taught a lot and turned out to be a great teacher in the end

I have witnessed incredible rudeness from her towards other students in the class which crosses the line and shouldn't be tolerated. No one is totally sure what her assignments entail after her vague explanations. She lacks sympathy and other social skills. She blew through her lectures and didn't revisit them as she said she would.

I am sick of her. If you are an art student, take as few classes with her as possible. She is condescending, rude, and just plain annoying. She doesn't explain projects well enough, won't take any excuse as valid, and she won't respond to an email about anything . You have to rely on your peers, so if you are not a social person, you will fail.

I think Nancy is a great teacher. I've notice that the people who don't like her are the same people that dont push the boundaries. Is college if you dont like harsh criticism or cant accept that your work isn't good enough than don't take her, she tells it how it is and most people don't like that. Sugar coating doesn't happen in the real world.

Professor Mata likes to play favorites. This you will find pretty evident on the first day of class. She knows her stuff but if you're not one of her "favorite" students you will not go nearly as far. I hope you're reading this! Stop playing favorites!

If you suck at design but full of yourself, then do no take her. You can learn A LOT from her, and she DOES have over 10 years of professional experience being not only a graphic designer, but also an Art Director in the a fortune 500 company. She does not bull**** and if you cannot handle that, quit college coz you are wasting your time.

Its an Introduction Type Class, I loved the class and learned a lot. If your looking to be creative with type take advanced type. If you want to know how to use typography correctly and understand type take this class. Awesome teacher!!!

awful. be prepared to learn nothing about new and upcoming ways to use type. she teaches and preaches out of date things. i have spent a TON of money on this class and have no real projects to show for it. she doesnt let you get creative at all. do what she says and youll do fine in the class, but if you are a true art student you will HATE her.

Nancy grades tough, If you don't do exactly what she wants you will not do well in her class. Honestly, didn't have a problem with an ego...she knows a lot but I'm not sure I can say she's a phenomenal teacher. Design is design and grading is always subjective. Overall this wasn't the hardest class ever. Projects were fun

I shouldnt have taken the previous reviews so lightly. Totally full of herself and her ego takes up the whole computer lab its hard to breathe in class. She loves to say she is right and dismisses every other opinion you might have. People who gave her good reviews were probably her favorites. If your not, good luck getting help. Worst class ever.

Is just plain full of herself and a mistake taking her class. Very impossible person, a horrible grader/evaluator. I recommend a heavy dose of valium for anyone who goes to take this class... She's better off running for office; she contradicts herself more than a politician!!!!

Like someone else said - Do what she wants you to for a good grade, or do what you want for a good portfolio piece. Plays favorites more than most teachers, if your not in her "clique" or don't do things her way forget it... I have taken 3 classes with her and have hated all of them. Thank god for graduating!!!

she taught so little in this class, it was a waste of my time, making art without comissions is something that she doesn't grasp and therefore taught very little, the class should have been call "graphic design and craft seminar" if you can take the class with shauna, even if it's your junior year

Mata is a great teacher. If you aren't going to be a Graphic Designer you can tune her out when she rants about her job, but if you are planning on being one, she is very helpful. Do what she likes for your projects and everything is cool. Take this class with her, she knows her stuff.
