Comment:
I wasn't sure about Dan at first- he can be intimidating. But I ended up just loving "Birth of the American Novel." I would absolutely take a Tynan class again. He is a tough grader, but he pulls awesome insights out of you. Fabulous class with a strong sense of community.

Dan is one of the best teachers at CC. His knowledge of the subject is deeply intricate and he know the best way to pull out meaning from the text and elicit great discussion from his students. I did some of my best work for Dan and always felt encouraged but also challenged. Cannot recommend him enough.

Comment:
American Renaissance Literature - very pleased. Professor Tynan's teaching style was perfectly suited to the topic (guided lectures, lots of hard questions, many papers). Blocks make literature hard (I read Moby Dick 3 times in a week for this course, but it was all to write a paper worthy of Prof Tynan).

The toughest profs often turn out to be the best. His oral finals were rough, but his hard-earned approval made me WANT to study and do well.

Comment:
Dan is a very tough professor, and can become extremely impatient. During a FYE trip, he got mad and threw a chair! Nonetheless, he is a great professor, very engaged with students, and appears to care a great deal about the success and growth of his students.

Tynan is like the ultimate witty, pirate, wise, English teacher. He's incredibly clear and challenging, but also has an awesome edge where you just know that guy has had some wild experiences.

It is not supposed to be easy is it? If you think it is supposed to be easy, make the five a one, or, consider it a two-and-a-half, and allow the possibility of values unknowable on a different axis. Whatever you do, do not bring jargon you do not understand to class.

Dan is the best. He was my advisor and he is now writing me a grad school recommendation. I can't believe I had to add him to this site. Really, really funny guy. He always makes the books you're reading engaging
