Professor Berthold definitely makes the class interesting and the student always feels a sense of accomplishment. He never feeds one the answers and he never expects his beliefs and interpretations to be regurgitated back to him. He constantly finds ways to make students come up with their own logical ideas and makes every class fun and productive.

THE Professor to have for anyone interested in continental philosophy. Daniel doesn't just teach it-- he LIVES it. Absolutely inspirational. Watch out for the sporadic bursts of Kierkegaard, Nietzsche, Heidegger and Sartre. Take even if morning classes.

When asked what teacher should you take before you graduate, many would say Berthold. The reason for this is because he embodies what professors at Bard should all aspire to be (and many are). His courses are challenging in the best of ways and he encourages a high level of thinking. Medical Ethics made me a much stronger writer and speaker.

Participation is mandatory! You better get yer butt out of bed in the morning and go listen to this guy, because he's a really passionate teacher, and he'll do his absolute best to help you understand some really opaque, difficult texts. Argue well in your papers (we just had 2) and be prepared to take a short-answer test at the end.

Daniel is passionate about the material and knows how to run a good in-class discussion. I don't know what else I could ask for from a philosophy professor. He can be a fairly harsh grader of papers.

Loved Daniel! He was amazingly smart and always acted out with passion whenever he got to a point which thrilled him. He was born for Philosophy, he's up there with Plato and Descartes ;). He can be very difficult if you don't follow the ideas he puts out...overall AMAZING. If you like Philosophy take his classes NOW

Excellent teacher. You learn a ton but he always makes sure to assign doable amounts of reading and work. Can be tough if you don't know what you're talking about in class. Feel free to talk but expect to have to defend your answers.

Daniel is extremely intelligent and wise. He's an interesting mix between PLato, Kierkegaard, Buddha, and Dalai Lama. His lectures are clear and concise. His ideas-- and the passion with which he conveys them-- pierce through your mind to the viscus layers of your soul. Extremely respectful/kind to students' ideas. Take him!

For some ungodly reason, Daniel writes notes and diagrams on the blackboard in such vague shorthand that they're impossible to decipher. It's not uncommon to see notes like "D says you NTBAA 10 in ord. to RGG and BFIGGFI" Aaaaargh.

Berthold is amazing!!! He's my favorite professor and the 8:30 class was more than worth it. After taking his class I switched so that he was my advisor. He's also extremely helpful outside of class as well as being an engaging, intelligent speaker. I would definitely take him again.

He's so good that 20 people were willing to take his class - which met at 8:30am on Mondays. His voice is a bit sleep-inducing and is clearly irritated by dumb answers, but he knows his material and is totally worth it for anyone with an interest in philosophy.
