I have Dr. Olson for topics research course. I have never taken a criminal justice class before, but he has made things incredibly clear and has been super helpful in every part of the research. He has brought in multiple guest speakers to our class and arranged a visit to a correctional center. He truly cares about us as students and researchers.

He's not as bad as everyone said. You HAVE TO READ A LOT! That was the only major issue. The class was straight forward. If you read the materials, come to class and take notes you'll be fine. Again, YOU HAVE TO READ ALOT!!!.

Comment:
Dr. Olson isnt too bad of a teacher. The only problem is that he is extremely sarcastic. He is pretty monotoned so lectures are long. He tends to keep you a few minutes after lecture too, so never expect to get out early. Otherwise this class was pretty easy. He takes participation grade but won't call on you if your hand is up, you wont get points

Dr. Olson is extremely knowledgeable. I might be jaded b/c this is a seminar and we don't do much actual work and we as students help steer the conversations we have and content we cover, but he's amazing wealth of knowledge. We also got to do a gun simulation with Campus Safety which was awesome- take, take, take!

Very knowledgeable professor who really knows what he is talking about. Lectures are straightforward and as long as you show up, participate occasionally, take careful notes, and do some of the reading you should get an A. Tests are very straightforward as long as you know what is on the study guide. Easy paper grader. Take him!

Took the class for my major and enjoyed it, much to my surprise. Learned more about gun crime than I expected and I feel like it was a good use of my tuition. Easy class, pretty clear lectures, interesting course material. Participate a lot and make sure to get notes if you miss class. Would take his classes again.

excellent professor! Really knows his stuff! this course is amazing and the way Dr. Olson taught it was beautiful. Gives as much detail as possible in such a short amount of time to really understand corrections. Would not hesitate to take him again. Tedious work, lots of readings, and medium coursework, but overall you will remember everything.

Dr. Olson is a very smart man, he gives you really good strong information. His lectures can be really long and boring. He also likes to cancel class in favor of doing online lectures/assignments. Papers aren't too hard, only 3 a semester. The book isn't necessary, but will help. Dont avoid him but dont go out of your way to take him.

Dr. Olson is a good teacher and he's pretty clear about the material, but don't go in expecting an easy A or B. The tests are tough and the papers are challenging, although the topics are interesting. I would recommend him, just be ready to work for a good grade. He has a good sense of humor by the way so class isn't too dull.

He's a hard worker but assigns a lot of papers and expects you to work as hard as he does. With this in mind, I thought a lot of his subject topics were opinionated, yet subject to a grade, which seems rather unfair for opinions, however that is the nature of criminal justice.

This is one of the most thought-provoking classes I've ever taken. Dr. Olson is awesome at making you question your previous beliefs&I learned a ton through him. 3 exams, all which were doable with TONS of studying, one essay (hard),&3 assignments (easy). His participation grade makes no sense but I would take him again.

Took for drug class and he used many powerpoints, but made sence of them. Overall the class was challenging but got the "A" so it was well worth the work. It was a very interesting class dispite thinking I knew it all. If you want to learn about drugs and policy take this course, it isn't too hard if you are willing to put forth little effort.

Unless you want to spend 24/7 reading for his class, I would not recommend him at all. His tests are crazy hard & all written. I would never take a class with him again, the amount of material he attempts to cover in one semester is just overwhelming and equates to not really learning anything since you're getting so much info.

Great teacher! Lots of reading & writing (4 short papers, 20 pg term paper, essay tests) but, do-able. Fair grader & available for help. If ur a CRMJ major he'll definitely give a diff. perspective on the subject. Try to do some outside research before class in order to ease discussions i.e. CRMJ news/articles. I highly recommend him :)

I have taken many classes with him and he is very helpful, willing to take assignments weeks later with no penalties, & very understanding. His classes do require a lot of writing but they are small and easy. Easy A's! His classes are interesting and he is very involved in the CJ System. I high recommend to take every class you can with him.

Too much of homework like readings, papers, webpages. Class presentations are a drag with thousands of charts and graphs for powerpoint. He asks the class to think and interpret those statistics too. I don't think he's a fair grader, especially on the tests and papers. If you don't get the answers how he wants it, you get penalized despite effort.

literally gives about 100 pages worth of powerpoint slides.. they give you a headache !!! although the topics were interesting, there was wayyy too much information to cover in one semester. difficult tests and a crazy amount of homework. nice guy but i would not take him again for any class.

i took him in the summer for 4 weeks and it was an awesome class- Corrections, a lot of reading, and some writing but it's not impossible, papers are easy, and we just had to write a journal about all the prisons/jails we go to. highly recommend him for a summer session, not sure about a regular semester..

His classes are interesting, but his tests are hard. The papers he recquires are simple to write, but the exams are pretty challenging. The class comes off easy, until the tests begin. Just don't take the light assignments for granted, and study very hard for the exams!
