Comment:
A tedious subject, but she teaches it with expertise and encourages you to think critically about the literature with a different perspective. She has a sense of humor. Write and explain yourself well on quizzes and tests. Sparknotes, Enotes, and Shmoop when you don't have time to read. Buy both textbooks; you'll need them for in text citations.

Dr. West acts like she really hates her job. My class was made better by the students in it. We got on her good side and she treated us better and showed a little sense of humor. Readings assigned every day, out of the big book, and there are about 10-11 pop quizzes which are short essays. DO THE READINGS. At least read the sparknotes version.

Absolutely disappointed in being given this teacher. We bought the book and do not use it, not bgetting that money back. She does not take the time to actually make a rubric, complains about having to then explain and further more when it isn't done right. Classmates and I have discussed not learning a thing and her wasting our time. Ridiculous.

If you value your learning experience at all or your time I would avoid West like the plague. No clear guidelines, overly difficult personality and chock full of excessively boring lectures that lack direction. She also does not explain her policies clearly and will punish you for not adhering to them, even those not found in the syllabus.

I took two of her classes last semester and hated them both. Her lectures are extremely boring and she is very subjective when it comes to grading and discussion. I like interacting with my professors but I found her unfriendly and unpleasant to deal with. I would never take her again and I would not recommend her.

She is a tough teacher, but I will honestly say that she was my most well-informed teacher; she really knows what she is talking about. If your GPA is very important to you, this class is a risk. The average grade was about a B/B+ (but A's are possible--I got one somehow). However, if learning from an expert is important to you--take this class!

Dr. West is a brilliant Professor. Expert in her subject, she is very demanding, but at the end of the course you can really see the results! I have learned more than I thought I would, and the way she explaines the subject makes concepts stick to your mind. Plus, she really thinks outside the "white canonized" critical tradition. Excellent course.

VERY subjective grading. Lectures are long and lack direction. Not helpful, slow returning assignments, gives unclear guidelines (if any). Would not reccomend and I will NEVER take again. (Attendance : More than 8 absences = Fail, 10 tardies = -10pts off final grade) (Grading: Final, Midterm, 10 Min. Presentation, 4 Papers, 10 Quizzes: 20% each)

Dr. West's class is challenging, but at least she isn't difficult to deal with. I took the African American lit course with her and got a B+, but I will say this: I will never take one of her courses again unless I am taking 12 hrs or less. Cool class but the workload is a little much for the English major who is taking 4 other Eng. courses.

Dr. West is nonetheless, a cool professor. I've taken her for other courses outside of Af.Am.Lit and grimly, they all mirror the Af.Lit--American Lit and Early Am. Lit. She is well known for pulling texts outside the literary canon.

Dr. West is brilliant. The texts use expand knowledge beyond the typically "canonized" literature. She knows what she is talking about and expects her students to learn-that's why we're in college, right?

So hard to follow her lectures..few grades besides midterm and final except for quizzes which she grades harshly. Don't take her unless you REALLY want to work for your grade.
