Great professor! Very informative and knowledgeable about all aspects of language and cultural relationships. This class is more of an analysis of language use today - not a study of language evolution over time. Awesome class, highly recommended.

I loved her language and Culture class. I want to do an independent study with her. She's really one of the smartest we have at USF.

I was worried this class was going to be boring but it was pretty good. mainly those of us who are anth majors thought the non-anth students made the class worse. She's an awesome professor, brilliant with a lot of great stories about Mexico and languages. I've heard my class was better than this semester.

This class was the most boring I have ever had. The class was easy, there are 3 tests and she gives a study guide with an overview of the stuff. She also assigns some assignments - which are easy if you pay attention in class. If you attend class, PAY ATTENTION (a huge part), and read the articles she assigns then you should do well.

VERY easy class. She's scatterbrained, doesn't make very good points, and the class is VERY boring. Tests are easy, assignmesnts aren't bad, but bring something to keep you busy.

I hated the idea of taking Linguistics until I took Dr. Messing's class!!! The class is very easy but very informative. The information actually turned out to be very interesting. Take her if you can!!

I loved this class and this professor. I didn't think I was going to because linguistics sounds boring but it turned out to be better than I thought. Tests were fair, she was really helpful when I went to office hours. With all the immigrationt oday it was good to stop and think about this stuff. She's pretty passionate about her work.

This class is extremely easy, although I almost fell asleep each time. She's really nice and her tests are really easy. I barely did any of the readings but did watch the videos during class which are on the tests and I got all A's. It is an interesting class and makes you think about language and communication. I would highly recommend it!

I loved this class -Surprise Surprise. Dr. Messing has got great stories about research in Mexico and we learned about dialects. The morphology assignment and that kind of thing was kinda boring. But the videos were really interesting. She loves what she does too, which is a change from some of the profs in this U.

This shouldn't come as a surprise: she's very "applied." Don't expect theoretical linguistics and grammatology, history, lit, etc. since she'll talk about Ebonics, instead. Maybe she'll put on a movie with Chomsky, without explaining why he's important. She doesn't even like questions, really, and will expect regurgitation and personal annecdotes.

VERY. VERY nice teacher, but tends to be a little boring. Has a monotone voice, and repeats herself quite often, making many students fall asleep. The lectures were ok, sometimes very interesting, sometimes very not. Very leniant grader. It is so evident that she is passionate about what she does, which is a really nice quality in a prof.

The readings for this class are awesome. We're talking about rap music in a linguistics class! Its great to have a young professor who loves her topic. some of the other students just don't want to write and this is a gordon rule class!

(lang. & culture) This may be the worst class I've ever taken. It has great potential, but I think the readings should be arranged differently and I think she could come to class prepared with engaging questions rather than relying upon students to keep conversation going. 4 memos, 1 (crappy) exam, and 1 final 10 pg. project.

I love Anthropology and I think that she's the best prof I've had so far. Her class last spring was great. She really makes you think bout real life communication. She was also really great when I had a personal problem and had to make up an assignment.

She is incredibly boring! Knows a lot of what she's talking about, but bring lots of soda and sugar to stay awake. It's the first week of class and I've already fallen asleep. She knows her stuff, unless you plan to go into linguistics, try to avoid this class.

Lectures many times unfocused and boring. Hard to stay focused in class due to her inability to keep you interested. She makes you not want to go to class because she goes over the same things over and over again.
