Comment:

One of the worst professors ever. He gives no constructive criticism and makes you look stupid in front of the whole class if he doesn't agree with what you're saying. The writing assignments were repetitive and useless. Avoid at all costs.

Comment:

A lot of the people who left negative comments for him can barely spell, so I can't imagine them liking any English professor. His discussions were very interesting. Don't blame your professor for your own lack of insight or understanding of literature. Professor Hoff is a really nice guy and was always extremely helpful-you just have to ask!

He is not a very good professor. Begins class with a summary of writer we read but then fails to make connections. I don't know, he just had this arrogance to him that made me dislike him. Class was dry.

he's okay. the class was a breeze. the only assignment we had to do was one 8-12 pg paper on pretty much any topic. if you want to be really motivated, don't take him, but if you just wanna fill up your requirements, then do.

I've never seen so much negative inf.-n at once. Have you ever studied psychology? The answer to those disgusting comments is right there. However, I found myself very interested in... literature.I wish it was a three month course. Mr. Hoff is really good.

Mr. Hoff is one of the worst professors I've ever had. He gives no constructive criticism and makes people look stupid in front of the class if he doesn't agree with what you're saying. He forces his opinions on students and doesn't like alternate interpretations of the text. Stupid daily writing assignments. Hates his job. Avoid if possible.

He is incredibly arrogant and provides no constructive feedback for comments on the literture,but insists that students be vocal.Truly one of the worst professors I ever had,and I tend to like almost any teacher.Class consistently results in a dry, uncomfortable atmosphere.I am pretty sure that he teaches only to fulfill his grad school requirement

If you are looking for a professor who could give comprehensible and helpful feedback, this professor would not be the one you are looking for. I remember spending my semester in his class, writing drafts after drafts for my research paper, and receiving vague and unhelpful feedbacks.

It's true he can appear dismissive and condescending at times, but I think students who complain of this are being VERY overly sensitive. I thought he was a great facilitator of discussion. Really tries to make you feel comfortable discussing critical essays. 1 short research paper which he practically holds your hand through. I'd take him again.

He comes to class unprepared and doesn't facilitate discussions at all. Then, he gets mad when people don't have much to say about the boring readings he assigns. There are 1-page writing assignments every class even though this wasn't a writing-intensive section. Avoid him if you can.

He can be a bit arrogant, but he is not as hardcore as most people here wrote. He is smart,and expects people to do their work and participate, and he will give u a 'ur stupid' look if your not making any sense, but for those who aren't easily intimidated by teachers and want to have discussions and learn, I would reccomend (spell check?) him.

Although I agree with the others that he is both stubborn and easily irritated, he means well. He's seems to be very intellegent which can be intimidating, but overall, hes a nice guy.

Personality-wise, Hoff is a bit stubburn. This was definately not my favorite class. He is very unclear of how he wants a certain assignment done, and becomes irritated when it's not what he expects. He tends to stress upon our errors after the paper is handed in or graded. But I'm sure if you meet up to his expectations you would do fine.

He's an extreemly fustrating person, to say the least. Although some of the class discussions are interesting, he never likes anything that you say because he insists that his way of doing things is the only way. He's very unclear about assignments and made me miserable all semester long. Avoid him.

He teaches through public humiliation. when we were 'learning' how to write the practice thesis and other parts of the final essay, he went around the room having everyone read theirs aloud and then publically criticized how bad it was. when the whole class did wrong, he said he couldnt understand how we didnt get it right after he 'explained' it!

At a certain level in college, students should be able to lead a fruitful discussion, without having the professor butt in at every second. Hoff is boring? Has an air of superiority? Why, because he expects students to do readings, and have a legitimate point of refrence when it comes to discussions; I mean really guys, why do we put down teachers for having expectations.

I can say that I don't like Professor Hoff too much as a person, but he was a good teacher. He was very open to helping the students and our class discussions were great. He is not very personable and has an air of superiority that isn't attractive, but I wouldn't say don't take his class.
