Read the required material for the next class. There is more than likely a chance for a quiz. If you read you know the answer. e.g. Q-what's in the box the character opened. A-there were a deck of cards in the box. Its that simple. I slept after the quizes and got an A in the class. The final is a little more challenging know Power Pyramid.

Come to every class! He gives VERY hard quizzes each class. We never had any extra credit and he takes off points for random things in the essays. He will talk about the power pyramid every class. I usually like literature and I hated this class. I would not recommend taking him.

Attendance isn't required according to the syllabus, but you better go because he gives quizzes everyday on what the reading assignments were. I wouldn't recommend taking this class at 8am just in case your late--there are no makeup quizzes. But if you read and listen in class, you can get a good grade.

Not a bad teacher. For an 8 am class it sucked. He talks pretty quietly and if you arent a morning person you will fall asleep. Attendance isnt manditory but he gives a quiz every class and you better have read...sparknotes are useless. So if you dont read skip class, it wont hurt your grade badly. Journal is free points, essays were graded fairly.

He is AMAZING. He is very passionate about what he teaches and his subject. Like everyone has said before; read, read, read!! That's all that it really takes, read and you'll do fine on the quizes. Attendance is not mandatory but he will take off points if you leave a lot. GREAT teacher, lots of extra credit in my class. TAKE HIM!! :)

The class is boring but not hard at all to pass. He gives quizzes EVERY class but they are not hard IF YOU READ!! He also assigns journals and 3 essay (easy). Newcomb is very lenient with assignments and he does not penalize late work. Overall he is a great professor and also very helpful and understanding

Saying that Newcomb is unprofessional is just silly. His style of teaching is called "what every college class should be like." He knows his stuff and is genuinely interested in teaching. Shame he's retiring. Best prof I've ever had. If you don't like doing the reading to take the daily quizzes, don't take him. That simple.

The instructor was unclear, unapproachable, knowledgeable but it was very difficult to learn about his "isms" given the way they were presented. Do not take. Quizzes aren't easy and grades are not given back. The instructor is vague and at times unfair.

In My opinion Newcomb was unprofessional and unfair.Newcomb was EXTREMELY unclear at times especially when describing our final assignment considering his directions conflicted with that of the prompt. While getting virtually no grades back I messaged Newcomb to see if my grade was somehow wrong or I could get my grades back.Newcomb never responded.

This prof rocks. He's fair, very involved, willing to help, and passionate about his subject. Quiz on every thing you read, so READ IT - you're in college now, people. Essasys are assigned, but aren't torture. Go to class, do the work, and ACE it.

Newcomb is by far one of the best teachers I've ever encountered. If you read the stories assigned (which you definitely should), not only will you do well on the quizzes, you will also gain more insight through Newcomb's discussions. Newcomb is a fountain of knowledge, and his approach is an example of how a college-level class should ALWAYS run.

pretty easy. go to class and read everything that's assigned b/c there will be a quiz. made class interesting and is one of the few ppl who despises literary terms (i.e. imagery, symbolism, the usual crap that is studied in literature clases)

Newcomb is a scholar and a teacher, he doesn't just tell you what to know for the test. If you're intelligent and can read and think then you'll do very well. What a great prof! It's easy to tell who the best students at Memphis are, and the worst. The best like Newcomb. Only the morons and second-class thinkers have anything negative to say.

Most of the readings have very little to do with literature. This is more like a study in philosophy that he's taught far too long and knows too well. He can make you feel foolish for not knowing things that you've never encountered before. His final did not reflect what was covered in class.
