I've never encountered a professor that puts more work into creating exceptional courses than Dr. Hyson. I've taken him for 2 courses (soon to be 3) & have been blown away at the amount we're able to learn in 16 weeks. He cares about his students, gives outstanding lectures, & provides beyond interesting content. One of my favorite professors EVER.

In Reacting to the Past, you act out numerous historical conflicts and become a character in that time period. Hyson loves the class and his energy is transferred to the students, many who get absorbed in the game. If you are shy, I would not recommend and there is a three page paper due every two weeks but it is worth it because the class was dope

I took my FYS - Reacting to the Past with Dr. Hyson and it was one of the best classes I have ever taken at SJU. It was so much fun and Dr. Hyson was always available to help you if you needed it. The class is all paper based so no tests or quizzes. He is such a nice guy and I highly recommend taking him for your FYS or History requirement!

This class ended up being my favorite class. It's a very different and unlike anything you'll ever take. It seems like it is a lot of reading, and it kind of is but you don't have to do all the reading assigned. There are no tests, only essays. You need to do a lot of research for your papers and it is a lot of work but it is fun. Hyson is great!

Dr. Hyson is a great teacher, really cares about his class and his students. Reacting to the Past is a lot of reading and papers, and you absolutely have to go to class. But if you put some effort into it, you'll do well. He gives a lot of good feedback on his papers and is always helpful in office hours.

This review is for Reacting to the Past. Not going to lie there is a lot of reading involved and a paper every couple weeks - short ones though. BUT if you do the readings, class is very fun and papers are easy to write!!! Go to office hours and Dr Hyson is very helpful and kind. Definitely the best FYS offered. Easy take home final.

This class requires constant participation and a lot of outside reading. The course is split into three different "games" where you are assigned a role and must write and speak in their perspective. Your only assignments are 2 or 3 essays for each game. No midterm and an easy take home final. If you skip class a lot then DO NOT take this class

This class is strictly papers and discussion. If you don't like to participate in discussion do not take this class. If you thrive on speaking out during debates then this is the class for you. Prep for this class is time consuming be warned, but overall as long as you put in the effort you'll be ok. THE GAME BOOKS ARE ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY.

Dr. Hyson is one of my favorite professors. He sincerely cares about his students. He often lectures, but they are interesting and participation is graded. The class overall is easy; it includes two unit tests, 6 "pop" quizzes, a final, and a reacting game. If you pay attention in class, these won't be too difficult.

Dr. Hyson is extremely helpful and caring. He is always willing to help his students and is great at responding to e-mails and scheduling meetings. He was great at explaining directions for his assignments and is a very fair grader. This FYS was a lot of fun and made history fun and engaging. I also gained confidence in public speaking.

Dr. Hyson is the most enthusiastic history teacher here. The entire semester consists of two tests, 6 easy reading quizzes, a reacting to the past game, and a final exam. For the tests he gives you a study guide containing all the short answer ids and the essay questions that will be on the test.

I love Dr. Hyson! He gives pop quizzes sometimes but he will always hint to you when they are! He would never just catch you off guard. He gives study guides for his tests which are nice but he is a little bit of a hard grader. His lectures are from the readings but he makes them interesting. Gives EC! I would recommend him!

No tests. The class is divided into 3 different units--Athens, China, and French Rev. For each unit you write 2 papers. That's all you will ever turn in to the class. No midterm. And the final is a take home essay. Dr. Hyson is very helpful. Not typical history class. Only about 10 classes are actual lectures. This class is very entertainingfun.

Dr. Hyson is one of the best professors I've had. Keeps every class interesting. Flowing seamlessly through the course, including multi-media presentations. In- class role playing games seemed strange at first, but quickly became the best part of my day. Definitely take any class of his. Incredible.

Ok well he is certainly pompous, there's no denying that. He's not that bad of a teacher, though. I really didn't like the role-playing game though. That got annoying real fast. But as long as you show you are interested you will do fine. He really likes it when you send him a rough draft of your papers and if you need help go to his office hrs.
