Professor Thorner is a very difficult professor who has very high expectations for your learning. However, I felt like I have learned a lot and grown as a person after being a student under him.

he's probably one of the worst professors I've had in college. in lectures he talks a lot about details we don't need to know, and his exam includes a lot of things from the textbook. he expects us to memorize so much in a very short period of time. try your best to avoid his class. you have to teach yourself

Good lecturer, exams are hard, avoid him and take MCB102 in the summer. He expects you to know everything, even the footnotes. If you take it in the fall, don't take hard and time consuming classes with it. If English is your second language, record the lecture, when he gets excited, he speaks really fast. I sometimes didn’t understand him at all.

There were more issues with his exam than I have room to write here. His email response to the class average of 42.2% effectively sums up the disdain he feels for his students. "Frankly, even though I know I wrote a challenging exam, I am disappointed that, as whole, the class did not do better overall." Avoid this lecturer if at all possible.

To Thorner, every question is a stupid question. Good lectures but 1-on-1 he's the most arrogant, childish adult I've ever met. Enjoys putting undergrads in their place/writing tests that make him feel superior because there's no *possible* way to learn all the info (which he refuses to narrow down) unless you're an experienced biochemist.

He was a good lecturer and his exam was fair for the material covered. He tells the class outright from the beginning that we are responsible for assigned readings, so I have no idea why people are so surprised about that. Going to lecture is enough to understand the material due to how thoroughly he explains it. He's snappy, but he doesn't bite!

I took this class a different semester, solely to avoid Thorner. I had contact with him 2 times and found him to be the rudest professor I have ever encountered. He went out of his way to be hurtful. It says a lot that so many comments mention his arrogance and generally disagreeable personality.

So, his lectures werent that bad. But yes he is arrogant. When he used the same test from 2002 he told the students that didnt see it that they should have been dedicated enough to find the copy on the internet. Blamed us for his mistakes. Also, does not cover all the material in lectures. Puts material on the test that is just in the book.

I don't know what you guys are talking about, I thought Thorner was a great teacher. Clear lectures and helpful during office hours. He seems condescending because people keep asking the same dumb questions. Wouldn't you be pissed if people kept asking you the same damn questions over and over especially when the answers to those questions were sai

Comment:
Yes his lectures are clear, but 90% of the material covered in lecture you won't need to know. He focuses on such small details like the property of one molecule. His assigned readings are pointless as they are just the entire chapter. His midterm turned out to be VERY similar to a 2002 midterm. Seems like an arrogant person in general.

I understand the negative comments other people have written about Thorner. But his lectures were clear; office hours were helpful. There are times when he seems a bit condescending but sometimes students just really ask some dumb questions. very knowledgeable. He is not going to hold your hand to make sure you get an A but he is fair.

Comment:
The first half of his lectures are barely tested in his midterm. In the end, he ends up covering a lot of information in a short amount of time. He also assigned long readings which were impossible to do in the week leading up to the exam. Like everyone else has said he is condescending and makes examples of his students who ask dumb questions.

He is not a terrible lecturer, but he isn't interesting either. Doesn't do anything to make you interested in the subject. He is a condescending **** and generally just an odd, self-centered, bitter human being. Acts as if he has not had much fun in his life and wants to make sure you don't either. Very cartoonish.

I had contacted him a couple months before class to find out which textbook to purchase ahead of time. He railed at me saying that he's paid for only 9 months out of the year and how dare I try to contact him over the summer, thereby reducing his time away from his research. His exams were ridiculous and confusingly worded.

Only after taking other mcb like 110 or 130 you can fully appreciate the knowledge he gave you. I'm thankful to this proff. because he touched on many things that are yet to come. Other classes are easier because of him. As far as exams, much of what he said was not covered and much of what he didn't say was there.study all anyway it will pay off.
