Prof Hoste is absolutely amazing! His practical approach to undergrad-level calculus really brings Mathematics into real life. For those who may not know, he's the guy who co-invented the Homfly-polynomial in knot theory, and he's definitely one of the best in this field. If you love topology or Maths, definitely join him before he retires.

Professor Hoste is literally the best math instructor I've ever had. Hw policy is extremely lenient, and all tests are fairly curved. Lectures can be fast paced, but he's very helpful during office hours. He's very intelligent and genuinely loves math, which is reflected in his enthusiasm during lectures. Would recommend to anyone who enjoys math.

Comment:

Jim is a really nice guy, available both inside and outside the class. He is really passionate about Mathematics and willing to giving a hand to those who found Calculus difficult. However, he did not grade the HWs on accuracy and did not dispense the HWs until the test was over. It is a little unhelpful to me. In general, his class is worth a shot

Professor Hoste is a very very very nice guy. His classes are mostly very interesting. His jokes in class are funny. But I have to admit that his classes are sometimes a little messy and but once you finish the assignments, all notes will be clear. Not so many assignments. About 2-3 hw a week and each with just several questions.

Tried my darned hardest in this class and didn't do well. He seems like he's about as good as a prof as other math profs in Claremont, but I wouldn't recommend him as a first semester freshman. It was a hard transition to the college math experience and I wouldn't recommend him. Not very empathetic. Although cute in class b/c he loves math so much.

He's a difficult teacher, certainly. But if you ask for help, he'll give it. The difference between Hoste and another hard teacher is that Hoste REALLY cares about his students! He wants to see you succeed and will work with you for that to happen. He's also really in love with his subject. Sometimes his voice cracks when talking about math!

Professor Hoste is REALLY difficult. No matter how "good" you think you are at math, you will still have to work a lot. Often I don't know what he is saying in class and from what I hear the feeling is common. He convinced half of the class that they should never take math ever again because it is too difficult.

Best professor Ive had so far. Very reasonable with homework and such, always answers questions well, prepares you for tests (I wasn't stressed about any of them). Also, compassionate: In an extremely unprofessorlike move, he sent out an email the night before a test saying "flu is going around: if you have it, rest and you can take the test later"

Jim Hoste is a great guy, loves math, very enthusiastic. He's helpful in office hours, and will work with you until you get it. He has a great sense of humor, and is very flexible with tests. Our class collectively did very poorly on one of his exams in his Calculus 2 class, and he let us retake the exam.

Hoste is incredibly flexible and will try to cater the intensity and difficulty to the class. He will let you turn in homework late no penalty, but you have to worry about it piling up on you. Tests came from the homework, and he went over everything in good detail. He's really good.

Comment:

Topology is an extremely difficult subject and Jim Hoste did a great teaching it! Passionate, clear, funny and eager to have his students learn. Take this class if you are afraid of numbers (we didn't use any), but you are good at abstract thinking. This class will stretch your mind! Also, there are no exams, just a final project and homework.

Comment:

He speaks like a textbook and will not clarify; when I suggested a more intuitive way of thinking about a problem or concept (to see if I understood it correctly,) he would invariably shoot me down and repeat the textbook way of describing it. That said, he has good office hours and intentions.
